I have been working on setting up a Minecraft server for a couple of days now, and I cannot find a way to get my friends outside of my network to connect. I know I gave them the right IP address, and I have tried several solutions with no luck. However, I can connect to the server using other computers connected to the router. However, I believe that this only works if the router is set to "cracked".

I tried disabling my firewall on both my host computer and my router, using a different computer as the server host, and changing the port. All of my attempts to fix the problem sent the same message, "Cannot reach Server", to my friends. I was able to connect to the server just fine with all other solutions. Here's some information that might be useful:

Host computer (It's not the best...): -OS:Windows XP Professional SP2 -Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz (uni-core) -RAM: 448 MB -IP Address: 192.168.1.111

Minecraft Server: -Version: 1.0.0 (jar)

Router: -Type: Wired/Wireless -Brand: Cisco -Model: Linksys E2000 -IP Address: 192.168.1.1 -Router Information: Firmware Version: 1.0.01 build 7Apr 15, 2010 Firmware Verification: 5447e765c2287b134ec7028c3b7c9ceb Current Time: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:44:02 Internet MAC Address: 98:FC:11:719:CB -Internet Connection: Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP Internet IP Address: 64.6.115.194 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 64.6.112.1 DNS1: 8.8.8.8 DNS2: 8.8.4.4 DNS3: 216.147.229.12 MTU: 1500 DHCP Lease Time: 4 Hour

Please let me know if there are any other details you require.

You must forward some ports (router setting) and then open the incoming port in your firewall's OS settings. Start here.

no luck

I tried that. It didn't work.

What error did you get? Is minecraft equipped with a manual for hosting servers? If so, does it specify which port it uses to host the server? Forward the correct port to the correct server's LAN IP. You should also ensure that there are no firewalls blocking this port.

On my friend's computer, it says, "Cannot reach server".

Most ISPs provide dynamic WAN IP. Always check your WAN IP as it may change. You might also need to include a port number such as 64.6.115.194.12345.

I solved the problem.

I got it to work...actually...quite a while ago. I forgot to post it.

However, I gave my friend an external IP address to connect to. I used my home network's internal IP address to connect to computers in my home network. I also set my router to forward port 25565 to my server IP (Server IP).

I'm sure a lot of you were saying that before, but I just didn't quite understand it well enough.

Thank you!

Isn't it possible that your external IP address changes all the time? Does that mean you have to give the external to your friend every time he wants to play? What happens if the IP address changes during play? Am I missing something about dynamic IPs?

mscholes asked: Does your external IP address change constantly? Is that not a reason to give your friend the external address every time they want to play? What happens if the friend's IP address changes? Is there something I am missing about dynamic IPs Click to expand...

Your ISP can assign you a range IP addresses. An IP address is assigned to a user when they connect to the internet. The expiry date/time is extended if the user remains connected. The IP that the user has previously used will remain available to another user once he disconnects.

You should put your host computer's ip address in the dmz of the router (Applications and Gaming > DMZ). See if this works first (list the routing table). If it works, set up Advanced Routing > Setup to assign the computer a static IP address. It's similar to a 192.168.1.100 adress. I can't read your manual any better, so I can't help you any further. Put your friend's computers in the dmzs of their routers also. You my also have to disable the router firewall. Good luck.

I know there are various posters but if you're following my idea look in the routing table of your router for the ip address I'm talking about. I think you find it in Setup > Advanced Routing in your router's setup. Or, keep it simple. The whole thing can be done without a router.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com this will show you your external IP used this IP to let anyone over the internet to connect to your server. You need to assign static LAN IP to your mincecraft server (OS settings), forward the ports used by your minecraft server (router settings), you need to open the firewall ports used by minecraft server game (OS settings).

user --> internet --> port:1234 WAN IP, ROUTER-->port1234LAN IP, minecraft server any data that goes through port 1234 (internet facing) will be forwarded to port 1234 of your minecraft server.

BTW, read the previous posts carefully

OK, here's what you do:

-Using any device connected via your network, go to your web search provider and type "what IS my IP Address?" You will see four strings of numbers that vary in length and are separated by dots. (If you don't see it, try another search provider) This is your IP address. Give this information to your server colleagues. -Next, open Command Prompt. Type "ipconfig". Your internal IP address is the first string of numbers. Use this for connecting your "game" computer to the server, as well as any other computers connected directly to your router. This can change, so make sure to check it often and edit the saved name accordingly. Now comes the tricky part. Now, go to your internet browser. Type your external IP into your address bar and hit Enter. If your router can be configured via an internet browser, the router setup webpage should appear. Take a screenshot of that page and upload it to this thread. I will tell you where to go from there.

NOTE: It is possible that your friends are not able to connect. If this happens, please post your router's setup page. You can still allow your friends to connect at this point. However, I don't know if it will work for you. It didn't work for me.

Please read the entire instruction manual.

I told you to post an image of the router settings. You can type the external IP address directly into your browser's URL bar and tell me how it looks. If nothing pops up, your router may not be compatible with port forwarding. Once you reach the page, press the [Print Screen] key on your keyboard. Next, open any image editor and paste the screenshot into a new photo. Save the picture and then post it to this thread. Minecraft Simple.

If you are having trouble understanding my instructions, please send me your Skype/Yahoo username and I will help you navigate the process with Skype/Yahoo! Messenger.

Hey, guys. I have had the exact same problem in the past. I haven't been able to connect to any Minecraft servers for about a month. I had a list at least ten servers that I wanted to connect to and they all said "Cannot Connect to Server".

A few days before this happened, my brother and me had made our own server. He port-forwarded and all, and I was able connect to it for the first few weeks. Then, I couldn't connect to it anymore unless I was using his laptop, which is where the server is hosted. Although I don't know if it has anything to do the current situation, I thought I would mention it. I can still connect to it even if I use his laptop and his laptop alone. He can't connect to any other servers than ours.

I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be connected.

I know that he had to do some things with the router for port-forwarding, but, like I said, we were able to connect to other servers for a few days after that, and then everything went dead. If you could please help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it!

To make matters worse, we bought a new router around the same time our problems started. I don’t see how this would have helped, but maybe there’s something I can do with this router. Please let me know.

@Seanic

1: Talk to your internet provider to see if there are any problems there

2: Make sure you have the correct IP address for the servers you tried to connect to. If necessary, include a port number. Not necessary: If it is 25565 (which is the default Minecraft port), you don't need it. Example: IP address 12.3.4.56 Port number 25566 IP Address including port: 12.3.4.56.25566

3: If you are still having problems, post your server IP address on the forums so I can see if I have any problems. I will also need information about when it will be online, so create a schedule and post it. Don't worry. I will only try to get a signal from it. I will not do anything other than what is allowed.

Though I am not a professional, I can still be of great help, because I have dealt with setting up a Minecraft server, and most of the problems comming from the laptop that runs it.

I'll try to arrange a time that I can turn on my server, but that might not be possible for a while.

But I thought I'd let everyone know that I can connect to only one server other than the one we host. It's the only one that shows up as online and the only one I can connect to.

April 22, 2012

Keep in mind, however, that not all public servers can be accessed 24/7. Even servers listed as 24/7 aren’t always available. Server maintenance, power outages or crashes can all impact them. That might be the reason you aren't able to connect to them.

ITS Simple I had the exact same problem #1. Download Simple Port Forwarding #2. You must Allow something on the Start Page, but I don't recall what it was. It was related to Java or The Jar. If they still cannot connect, unlock their Internet Router or give them a Password.

I have 1 question for everybody, I have a Normal server and my friends CAN connect to it, I made a Bukkit Server but I can join it, but my friends cant and everythings the same as the Normal server, Do I have to Port anything else?? ?

Your internal IP address could have changed. Click Start on the server computer and then click My Network Places. Double-click the internet connection it uses to find it. In the dialog box that appears, click on Support tab (if it is Windows XP). It will tell you the IP number. To forward to the new IP address, you will need to update your port forwarding settings. Note: While I don’t know which tab Windows Vista or 7 shows the IP address, I can assure that the IP address is located in that dialog box.

If attempting to access your router through a web browser (by entering the external IP address into the address bar) does not bring you to the router's settings page, your router either... 1. You cannot access the settings page via a web browser. In this case, compatible software will be required to access the settings. Does not have a settings page at all, in which case it does not support port-forwarding, and you will need to use an alternative method to forward the server port to the server, or just get a router that does*.

Note: My Linksys E2000 wireless/wired router supports port-forwarding. If you do decide to purchase a new router, you can base your decision on that.
