Aivars Lembergs of Latvia, an Oligarch and financial criminal was sentenced to five-year imprisonment
After 12 years of heated court battles, a Latvian court has read its verdict in the highly-publicized trial of Aivars Lembergs, one the richest men in Latvia as well as a popular populist politician, and ex-mayor of Venspils, the port city located in the northwestern region of Latvia.

Lembergs was acquitted of charges of money laundering and bribery at a high level. But, he has continued to be a political leader in Ventspils where he served as the mayor for 25 years and also has a significant role in the Greens and Farmers Alliance party force he funds.

His election as mayor was suspended after he was charged with financial crimes , but he continued to exercise the most mayor of the city, fighting attempts by one minister to prevent his role as Ventspils mayor with little problem. He even took part in government meetings with the International Monetary Fund, and was a part of the process to select candidates for the Latvian president while being under investigation.
