How To - Run Your Own Minecraft Server On A Mobile

My son wanted to play Minecraft last night with his friends. It's very easy to play Minecraft with your friends if you live in the same place or have the same WiFi access points. He spent New Years Eve with his friends, creating new worlds on the sofa, iPads in hand.

They were all in the same house, so after hooking into the same WiFi hotspot they all connected up easily thanks to the clever "Publish to LAN" feature and off they went.

However, if you're in different places it can become a bit tricky. It involves connecting with a server over the internet. If you want to make your own, you will need to either download a Windows executable (or a Java program) which can be run on Linux. It's possible to have a Windows computer lying around, but do you really want it on all the time? It will only display this screen...

This will mean that you will need a computer (or a server on an internet server) to run the program. You'll also need to open the appropriate ports.

However, you can actually do all this on an old Android phone. You'll need the PocketMine app, and a phone that you can leave on. Before all that though, you'll need to know a bit about how your broadband router works. Most routers are fairly secure, so your broadband provider doesn’t want you playing around with the settings. Here are the details if you want to "fiddle" with your router settings.

Download the app and choose the version you like. The "Stable", for me, worked well.

I'll be back on the rest of the app setup in a moment, but it's pretty self-explanatory. You only need a name and not much else.

If you open Minecraft and click "Play", then "New", you will see a small symbol at its top that looks similar to this.

..not any people hit that. They just create a world and then off they go. But, it will ask you to hit that in a second.

This is where you will need to configure your broadband router. First, find the external IP address for your broadband connection. Just type "my IP" into Google or head to a free IP detection tool like turboluck.com/my-ip. This information will be needed to share with your family and friends so they can use it to connect to your server from their phones or tablets. However, they'll be trying to connect on a certain port. This can be any Minecraft port, so pick one or keep the default. Next, go to the advanced setting of the broadband router. You will be looking for "NAT / PAT". Tell your router to forward requests for your selected external port to the appropriate internal port on your LAN's IP address.

Yes, this can be confusing. Let's get started with the PocketMine application. Run it. It will ask for a server name and port, as well as the type of game that you wish to create (Creative. Survival. Adventure. Spectator). Once it's started, you can place the phone anywhere in your home and forget about it. However, you will need the IP address of the phone. You can access your WiFi settings to see what IP address it has. It could be 192.168.0.7. Make a note.

Next, go to your router and edit your NAT/PAT rules so that requests for your magic port (say 22535), go to 192.168.0.7 (your smartphone) on port 22535. This is essentially routing.

It's then easy to get your friends to input your IP address and the port you have set. 1 site You're good to go. Everyone can play together as long as the app is running on an Android phone. It's done.
