How To Set Up A Minecraft Server

You may like Minecraft but don’t want to play with strangers. It's understandable. Your friends can "eff off" you a lot more easily than a stranger. Hosting your own server from your personal PC is the best way to do it. Here's how.

First, determine if you are able to host it. It looks lo-fi, but needs a decent PC and a pile of bandwidth. The Can I host Minecraft site will let you know if it's possible. Multiplay might have a package for you if your needs are not met. That said, even a Raspberry Pi can run a modest Minecraft server, albeit with various features turned off. It's all about the demands you want to place on your machine.

For the most basic setup of a server on your computer, you will need Hamaachi and server software. Head to the Minecraft downloads page and grab the windows .exe file. It will be saved in a folder on your hard drive with plenty of space. Grab Hamachi from this site and put it aside for now.

You'll see the GUI when you run the exe file. While that's running, it creates some files in the folder, and starts the server. When it's done, it will actually be running a Minecraft World, but no one will ever be there. Apart from raising philosophical questions, such as "If the Creeper explodes somewhere in the woods and nobody is there to hear it," it also means that you can modify the world without making any difference to anyone else. "server.properties" will have the greatest impact on how you create the world. This file should be opened in Notepad and used to play around with. Close the GUI and open "server.properties". There are a lot of lines, mostly self-explanatory with "true" or "false" states. I'd leave the majority of it alone as it sets up an offline game server. But you might want the "pvp=true” line changed to "pvp=false". Set "online-mode=true” to "false". Once the server is running, you'll need people to populate it.

Hamachi is here to help. It creates an invisible private network between you and your friend. You and whoever you want to connect to your game needs to download the client and create a log-in. minecraft servers Hamachi will show you an ip address. Click it to grab the "ip4" address. Now, open server properties and copy it to the "server-ip=xxxx" line.

With that done, if you run your Minecraft server anyone that connects to your Hamachi network will be able to join your Minecraft server. Although it is a bit complicated, it will allow anyone connected to your Hamachi network to access your Minecraft server. If you do, you'll probably want to invest in a proper dedicated server.
