How To - Run Your Own Minecraft Server On A Mobile

My son wanted to play Minecraft with some of his friends last night. It's really easy if you're in the same house or on the same WiFi access point. During New Years Eve he spent an hour with his mates, iPads a-plenty, on the sofa creating new worlds together.

They were all in the exact same house, so they all connected to one WiFi hotspot.

However, it can be tricky if you're located in different parts of the world. It involves connecting with a server over the internet. If you want to make your own, you will need to either download a Windows executable (or a Java program) which can be run on Linux. There might be a Windows computer in your house, but do they really need it to be on all the times? It'll only be showing this screen...

This will mean you need a computer that is running (or a web server) and you will need to open all relevant ports.

However, you can actually do all this on an old Android phone. You will need the PocketMine application and a phone that can be left on. Before you do that, though, you will need to be familiar with how your broadband router functions. Most routers have strict settings and your broadband provider won’t let you alter them too much. But if you like to play "fiddle", here are the details.

Grab the app and download whatever version you fancy. The "Stable" version worked well for me.

I'll get back to the rest, but it is pretty straightforward. All you need is an app name and nothing else.

When you open Minecraft, click "Play" and then "New", you'll see a symbol at the top that looks something like this.

It is rare for anyone to achieve that. They just create a world and then off they go. However, it will ask for the name and IP address of your world and port.
Minecraft Servers List

This is where you will need to configure your broadband router. First, locate the external IP address that will be used to connect to your broadband. Simply type "my IP" in Google or use a free IP detection tool such as turboluck.com/my_ip. You'll need this information to give to your friends and relatives so they can add it to their iPads or tablets to join you server. However, they'll be trying to connect on a certain port. This port can be almost any Minecraft-related thing, so choose one (or leave the default one) and then enter the advanced setting for your broadband router. You will need to search for "NAT/PAT". Your router will ask for the request to be sent to the appropriate internal port at your LAN's internal IP address.

Yes, this can be a bit confusing. Let's begin with the PocketMine app. Run it. It will ask for a server name and port, as well as the type of game that you wish to create (Creative. Survival. Adventure. Spectator). Once you've started it, you can leave it in your house. However, you will need the IP address of the phone. You can access your WiFi settings to see what IP address it has. It could be something like 192.168.0.7. Take a note.

Next, head over to your router to edit your NAT/PAT rules. Make sure that any requests for your magic ports (say, 22535) go to 192.168.0.7. (your phone) on port 22535. What you're doing here is basically a bit of routing, which is what the thing is for.

It's then easy to get your friends to input your IP address and the port you have set. All you need is an Android phone with the app installed. Job done.
