Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss coach, asked why Alabama quarterback Bryce Young wasn't able to enter the NCAA transfer portal. He wanted to use it as leverage for increasing the Heisman Trophy winner’s NIL earnings.
"Why didn't Bryce Young go into the portal?" Kiffin asked during a Sports Illustrated interview that was published Wednesday. "If you are giving advice to Bryce Young, why don't he go into the portal and go into Nick Saban's offices and say, "Hey! I want to be there, but I need to protect my self so I'm going in the portal. And I'm willing to return, as long it's matched with my experience out there.
"The kid would make 10 times what he would have made. How could that happen? It should. It will.
Young is the projected No. ESPN's 2nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft is Young. This assumes that Young will leave college after the upcoming junior season.
Nick Saban, Alabama's coach said that Young had already earned close to $1million in NIL contracts less than three months after the NCAA made its rule change regarding NIL last July. Wowwiki It is not known how much Young has made since last summer, but Saban said at a World Games event last week that 25 players from Alabama last season earned NIL deals totaling $3 million.
The Athletic reported that a five star 2023 recruit was being paid $8 million by the school's NIL collective. Some believe that player to be Tennessee signee Nico Iamaleava.
Kiffin suggested Young enter Alabama's transfer portal. However Young is not one of Alabama’s highest-performing players. While 18 of the Tide’s scholarship players have been accepted into the portal since last year, none of them will be full-time starters in 2020.
May 1 was the deadline for fall athletes to have completed the transfer portal to be eligible to play immediately next year.
