The main objective of the EU drivers' hours rules is to improve road safety and working conditions for lorry, bus and coach drivers, and to ensure a level playing field for hauliers operating across Europe.
There are two types of EUdrivers' hours rules:
1) Basic rules - these apply to all drivers in the EU, regardless of the vehicle they are driving or the distance they are travelling;
2) Special rules - these apply to certain categories of driver, such as those transporting goods on international journeys, or driving buses or coaches carrying passengers.
The basic rules cover things like how long you can drive for without taking a break, and how long you can work in total each day and week. The special rules include additional provisions on things like rest periods and record-keeping.

If you are an employer, it is your responsibility to make sure that your drivers comply with the drivers' hours rules. This includes keeping records of their hours and making sure they take the required breaks. If you do not comply with the rules, you could be fined and your drivers could be banned from driving.
If you are a driver, it is important to familiarise yourself with the rules so that you can avoid breaking them. If you do break the rules, you could face penalties including a fine and a driving ban.
