The simple set-up allows the movie to focus on delivering almost non-stop action that includes some wonderfully over-the-top sequences like a fight in a butcher shop where animal carcasses are used as weapons and a fight in the back of a fast-moving van. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter are one of movie history's greatest actor/director duos, and "Escape from New York" is one of the best movies in either of their filmographies. It's an undeniably ridiculous premise and the movie knows that, but it plays itself entirely seriously which just makes it more fun. One of the best movies made on a tiny budget by a group of friends, "Deadbeat at Dawn" tells the story of gang leader Goose whose girlfriend is killed by members of a rival gang just as he's trying to leave his life of crime behind. The movie's focus on the grimy world of street gangs combined with its low budget gives it a real sense of danger as we watch Goose and his friends seek revenge. That's especially true in the movie's finale, as actors perform seriously dangerous stunts without any regard for their safety but with a commitment to making the most exciting movie they could.
The ridiculous premise of a man who has to keep his heart rate up because otherwise he'll die of poisoning means that the movie can't slow down because if it does, the lead character will die. You may also want to head to a funeral home if you don't find yourself tearing up during My Neighbor Totoro. One of the many Studio Ghibli movies on HBO Max, Totoro also happens to be their best, thanks the movie's mix of animation, emotion, and creature design. The story of two girls moving to the countryside is an all-time tearjerker, with a cute monster to boot. Martin Scorsese's gangster flick is best served with garlic, gravy, and a table full of friends. No movie on our list has more hangout potential than this one — the story of Henry Hill and his journey from child to made man is one of the most joyous experiences in all of cinema.
New episodes of this limited series are streaming weekly on HBO Max. Recent college grad Andrew is living with his parents, feeling aimless and working as a professional party starter for bar and bat mitzvahs. But when he strikes up a friendship with a mom and her autistic daughter, he begins to finally figure out what he wants his future to look like.
Joel Kim Booster stars alongside Bowen Yang, Margaret Cho, Conrad Ricamora and James Scully in this tender rom-com, now streaming on Hulu. This heartwarming Netflix documentary, which has a 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, depicts one couple's love story and their experiences coming out. In this 1990 horror comedy, the small-town folks of Perfection, Nevada must survive an invasion of wormlike monsters.
IFC Films Unlimited lets you stream a strong selection of independent movies, without ads, for a very reasonable price of $6 per month. Note that you must use it as an add-on channel to another service, such as Apple TV or Roku. Juragan Film HBO Max has one of the best and most well-rounded streaming libraries, thanks to Warner’s deep bench of brands ranging from Cartoon Network craziness to HBO prestige. However, its impressive film library is especially appealing to mainstream cinephiles who care about movies beyond what was released this century.
Leonardo DiCaprio is a thief who infiltrates people's thoughts in this mind-bending science fiction film from Christopher Nolan. In Steven Seagal's highest-rated film, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the action star is a former Navy SEAL, now working as a cook, who must fend off nuclear terrorists on his battleship. This Academy Award-nominated Netflix documentary spotlights never-before-heard recordings and rare archival footage of pioneering recording artist and Black icon Nina Simone. Alfonso Cuarón's Academy Award-winner depicts the life of a Mexico City family's maid in the 1970s.
