How To Make A Minecraft Server

Minecraft is a popular sandbox sandbox game for many different reasons. It's very easy to pick up and learn, gives you the flexibility to do whatever you want in the game, is essentially endless, and lets you build anything you want, provided you have the creativity.

Minecraft's popularity is largely due to its ability to be played with others. This isn't to be confused with online games such Call of Duty, where your friends play pre-loaded levels. Online Minecraft allows you and your friend to create an entire world together. To play online with your friends you will need to set up a server you both can connect to.

Please note: It is a good idea to get permission from your parents before you create a private server. Security risks can be caused by parts of this tutorial. You should have a parent along with you to help you download any extra files.

What is a Minecraft Server? Things to Consider Before Hosting a Minecraft Server Steps for Creating a Minecraft Server

Enjoy Your Multiplayer Minecraft Server

What is a Minecraft Server?

A Minecraft server allows multiple people to play together in the same Minecraft world. This can be handled in different ways, so it's important that you understand your options.

You can rent a server through a third-party, such as Apex Hosting or Hostinger. It does almost everything for your business, but you must pay a monthly service charge. Depending on the service, this can be as low $5 as $5.

You can manage a server yourself. This allows you to control the server's operation and saves you money. This article focuses on making your own Minecraft server without using a third-party.

Minecraft also runs personal multiplayer servers, called Realms, just for you and your friends. Your Minecraft world will always be online, even if you log off.

Things to Consider Before Hosting a Minecraft Server

Benefits of Using Hosting Your Own Minecraft Server

- You can have total control over the server at all times. You can do what you want as fast as you can. There is no need to rely on someone else doing things for you.

- You have the ability to upgrade your computer however you desire to increase performance. There are many server hosting companies that charge higher premiums for higher specs. But if you have the most recent generation processor, maximum ram, and a powerful graphics card, your server could be one of the most powerful.

It can be fun and rewarding to learn how to set up and configure network. You'll be able to learn about many network features that you might not have known otherwise.

It won't cost more than what you need to run your computer. Hosting companies can be expensive, but hosting your server yourself will only cost what it takes to keep the computer running.

Hosting your own Minecraft server can be very rewarding, but it does have a few drawbacks you should understand before attempting it yourself.

To run your own server, you will need the right hardware. This includes either a Windows 7-compatible PC or a Mac running MacOS 10.4 (or higher). Although it is possible to host your own server using a Chromebook, this tutorial does not cover that.

- A reliable computer is not enough. You also need to have an active internet connection and access the router.

- Your computer specs that are needed heavily depend on what type of server you run and how many players are on at any given time. A server with many players will require more RAM and a faster processor. The same applies to adding mods on your server. If you are only playing vanilla (meaning no mods), then you can get away without much RAM. You can get away with a few gigs of RAM if you only play vanilla (meaning no mods), but once you start adding mods, you'll need to double or triple the RAM you dedicate to your server.

- You'll need an internet connection capable of handling multiple players concurrently, since you'll be running the server via a computer. No one wants to log onto a Minecraft server only to lag and get booted every 15 minutes for a modem restart. It is necessary to have a computer in order to run the server. However your friends can still play on your server from other platforms as long they are using the same Minecraft edition. If you run a Minecraft Java Edition 1.6.4 server, your friends will need Minecraft Java Edition 1.6.4 installed on their devices.

It is your responsibility to manage this server. It's your responsibility to fix any problems that may arise. Players will rely on you to fix any issues or bugs that they may have and if there are disputes amongst players, you're often the person that gets to handle them.

It is more than simply downloading a program to your computer and turning it on. You will have to configure your network and router, learn about port-forwarding, and you may need to use the command-line to edit configuration files.

Cyber attacks on your computer and private data can result from the above requirements. This could expose your network to security risks like DDoS attacks. Someone could find sensitive information about you if your IP address is compromised. Please be cautious if you choose this route. Also, ensure you follow the next steps safely. If you're interested in running your own server but don’t want one hosted, we have an article about Apex server host hosting.

Steps for Creating a Minecraft Server

1. Getting Started: Download the Latest Version of Java

Still here? Great! Let's begin making our own Minecraft server.
Minecraft servers list

Start by creating an empty folder that holds all of our downloaded files. You can put it anywhere you want, but I find that it is easiest to create a new folder right on your desktop.

In our examples, we will be placing everything inside a folder called "My Awesome Server" directly on the desktop. Right-click any empty space on the desktop and click "New Folder". You can then rename the folder to anything you like.

After creating your folder you can start downloading the files necessary to host your own server. Let's first make sure Java is up-to-date on your machine. You can do that by clicking here or going to https://www.java.com/en/download/. This link will take you to the correct download, regardless of whether you are using a Mac computer or a PC.

Add the installer to your folder created in the previous steps. Double-click the installer and follow the prompts.

2. Download the Server.jar File

Once Java has been installed, you can download the server.jar file.

You might notice that the version number of the images/gifs you are using is different from what is shown. That's fine, the steps should be identical.

Your computer might warn you that the file may be dangerous. This is a normal warning about any.jar file. These warnings should be ignored if you don’t know where the file is coming from. That being said, I think we can trust Minecraft on this one.

Save the file into the "My Awesome Server", folder if given the option. If not, just copy and paste or drag the download into the folder once it finishes.

3. Create Your Server Configuration Data Files

Once you have your server.jar file inside your "My Awesome Server" folder, either double-click it or right-click > open it to create your configuration files automatically.

There is a EULA agreement (End User License Agreement) that you will need to accept to prevent your server from immediately crashing. Open the EULA file (it might say eula.txt depending upon your machine) and change the eula=false value to eula=true. To save this file, go to File >Save or press ctrl+s

4. Run Your Server

Double-click your server.jar again. You will now generate a handful of new files and also see your server start.

If your goal was to make your own Minecraft server to play with friends on the same internet connection as you then you have reached the end. Congratulations!

For friends who are connected via the same internet, log onto Minecraft. Click the Multiplayer tab to find the server you created. You must also be using the same version Minecraft.

However, if you wish to play with your friends using an internet connection other than yours (such as a home), then you still have some work to do. Continue on ....

5. Port forwarding

Warning: This tutorial section is the most difficult and can pose security risk. Make sure you have a parent present when you complete this step. Do not download any extra.

Port forwarding is required in order to allow your friends to connect with your server when they are connected via a different internet connection than yours. This step will differ depending on the router you use.

I will detail the steps it took to set my Xfinity router up for port forwarding. But you will need to do your research and follow its steps.

Navigating to the Port Forwarding section at Xfinity's website is the first thing I did. I found it by searching for "How to Port Forward My Xfinity Router", so I suggest a similar search with your router's name.

Next came common configurations, which included Minecraft. I chose this option. If you don't have this option, the important thing to know is to use port number 25565 for Minecraft.

Any other port number will not work. Note that I have blocked my IP Address. This is the part that you want protected from anyone you don't trust or know. Depending on the router you have, they may reserve an IP address for your account (Xfinity did this for my). If that is the case, this will be the IP Address that you will share with your friends. If they don't reserve one for you you will need to use your own IP address.

Once you have completed Port Forwarding, your friends should be able to log into Minecraft and click the Add Server button. They can name the server whatever they want (it does not have to match your name) then type in your IP address. If you do not know your IP address you can google "What's my IP address" and it should be one of the first results.

When adding the server, you may need to include :25565 at its end. If it does not recognize the server, we recommend that you try it without it.

6. Configuring Server Properties

Now that you have a server running, it's time for you to make any changes you like. The file server.properties is located in the "My Awesome Server" folder. Your computer won’t know how the file can be opened right now. But if you right click it and select Open with you should see a list of options.

You can open this in any text editor of your choosing, but Notepad works just fine if you aren't attached to another one. You'll see a list of server properties when you open it. Each property can be edited to your liking.

A complete list of properties and their meanings can be found here. Let's talk about some of the more common ones first.

difficulty - This can be either a string property or an integer property that determines the difficulty level of your server. Integers can be 0, 1, 2, or 3 String values can be peaceful, easy or normal. Hardcore - This takes a boolean value (true/false) that describes how your players would be treated if they died in game. If the value is true, players will be automatically placed in spectator mode after they die. level-seed: This value is set to true by default. It will automatically generate an seed when you start your server. If you have found a seed that you like online, you can write it here and get a copy.

max-players is the maximum number of players that can be on your server at once. This is useful if you have a computer which struggles to run when multiple users log on at once.

motd - this sets a Message Of The Day for all players to see when they log in on your server. It can be useful to give all players useful information at once.

pvp: This is a function that allows players and their friends to kill each other when it's set to true.

Here's how my server.properties looks when I open it using Windows Notepad.

And there you have it! You are now running your own Minecraft server and you can have all your friends join it as you wish.

There are many things you can do with your own server such as manage game settings, customizing your own white-list, adding your own mods, and allocating however much memory that you have to spare. It is best to start small before you go crazy.

Minecraft can quickly consume resources that most people don't have. Your computer may struggle to handle all you ask it to. Remember to not share your IP address with anyone you don’t trust or know.
