An AI Was Trained To Play Minecraft With 70,000 Hours Of YouTube Videos - IGN

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research organization founded by Elon Musk, has trained an AI to play Minecraft almost as well as humans. It took only 70,000 hours of watching YouTube videos.

The blog post explains how researchers used "Video PreTraining" (VPT), to train a neural network to play Minecraft. This involved collecting 2,000 hours of Minecraft-playing data.

The researchers then trained an inverse dynamics (IDM), which predicted the future actions at each step of the videos. Finally, the "trained IDM", which was based on Minecraft YouTube videos, was shown 70,000 hours. The model was then able to replicate the behaviors in the videos, including chopping down trees to gather logs and turning them into crafting tables.

That's not all the AI model was capable of doing. It could also perform complex tasks such as swimming, hunting, or eating. The AI could even do "pillar jumping" which involves keeping yourself in the air by repeatedly jumping and placing a block underneath yourself.

Researchers were able, using the AI's data, to create a foundation model that could be used to fine-tune and learn new behaviors. The AI was able to build wooden and stone tools, raid chests, and even shelters.

The AI became more capable the more data was added to the foundation model. The researchers even used reinforcement learning to "reward the AI for solving difficult problems. The reward system was so effective, the model was capable of crafting a diamond pickaxe. This is a difficult task that requires a series of tasks.

This is a fascinating example of machine learning. It also shows how gaming can be used for training computers. Perhaps the AI model used may even be incorporated into games themselves to provide a more natural challenge akin to playing against human opponents.

The AI could also improve upon the annoying boss battles in the new Outriders Worldslayer campaign. The Outriders new expansion is both what fans want and keeps some of the less well received aspects of the original game.
