How To Setup A Simple Minecraft Server

Note: This guide shows you how to set up and configure a Minecraft Server. However, this involves changing your home network configuration. This is not something that you should do unless you have the necessary knowledge. Minecraft Realms has a small, private server that you can buy for your friends. If you're still interested in setting your own private server, please be aware that we are unable to support private servers or home networks.

Here's a guide to help create a server for your friends so they can play together.

Java must be installed and up-to-date on the computer that will host your server to allow it to run.jar files. 1. Go to this website and download the minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file (The X's will be the current version number) 2. After you have downloaded it, make a folder on your desktop to keep all your server files in. You can name it "Minecraft Server". 3. Drag and copy the.jar file into your Minecraft Server folder.

4. While the file browser remains open, open the command prompt menu from the start menu.

5. You can check if Java is installed in command prompt by typing without quotes "java -version".

6. To start the Minecraft Server, you will need change the directory location to the one where the Minecraft Server folder and.jar file are located.

7. The directory can be found in Windows by clicking on the browser directory link in the file browser. (The theme and color of your file browser will appear different due to your personalization settings) Copy this address to your clipboard.

8. Type without quotes "cd" hit space and then paste the address you just copied, then hit enter.- This should look like "cd C:UsersAdminDesktopMinecraft Server"

9. After entering the directory, enter the following commands manually.
Minecraft blog

10. After pressing enter, you will see the failed to loads properties and failed to open eula.txt errors. Don't worry, you can just rerun the command once you have configured these files.

11. Open the "eula.txt." text file that was created with your editor. This is where you will need change the eula=false setting to eula=true. Save.

12. You will also see a file called "server.properties". If it doesn't look like an editable text document, right-click it and click on "Open with", click "More applications" if Windows 10 is installed. Scroll down to select your text editor and notepad. (It is suggested to keep the box that says to "Always use this app to open .properties files" if you would like to avoid repeating this step every time you want to edit the properties file and other .properties files).

13. There are many settings available here. We will focus on the core settings to get your server working. Take note of the query.port setting as this is the port you will need to forward on your local router to allow other inbound connections.

14. The gamemode setting will allow you set if you would like to play survival or creative. Enter what you'd like to do by following the "=".

Spawn-protection specifies the radius of blocks in the server spawn that cannot be broken. You can change this to 0 if you would like them to be broken.

15. The allow_nether option indicates if you would like the nether to be on your server.

The server's difficulty can be set by its difficulty. This can be peaceful, easy, normal, hard, or somewhere in between.

16. You can set the pvp setting to allow players to hurt each other.

17. Max-players indicates the maximum number players who can join your servers. This can be adjusted to reflect the amount of RAM your server has.

18. If you have one, the level-seed lets you insert a seed into the world.

Motd is the message that Minecraft server browser displays to other players once you have been added to their list.

You will need to run the launch command again in the command prompt. The server should now be up and running. You can launch the server again by repeating steps 8-9.

Making sure you are in the Minecraft Server file directory and enter java -jar "your jar name".jar into command prompts

For more information on the settings and options for the server.properties.file, please visit this link. Scroll down to "Java Edition".

You will also need the port listed in server.properties queries.port. It defaults at 25565. You will need to specify the port to forward in your router configurations. This process will vary from different router manufacturers. If you need assistance in forwarding a port, please refer to your router's help site/manual.

By default, if you did not specify anything in the server-ip setting, the server will point to your public IP, this is what other players will need to connect to your server and play with you.

Simply type in your search browser "What is my Public IP?" Make sure to look for IPv4 IP addresses. These IP addresses only contain numbers and have only three decimals.

Once you have your public IP, we STRONGLY urge you to not give it out publicly and advertise with it as giving your public IP out publicly is a security risk to your home network. Only give your IP address to people you are comfortable with and trust.
