Ceto merupakan dewi laut awal, bahaya laut, monster lautan yang secara rinci merupakan dewi dari hiu besar, paus, dan monster lautan, ia menikah dengan saudara laki-lakinya yaitu Phorcys yang merupakan dewa laut kuno, dan menjadikannya ibu dari raksaksa mengerikan yang disebut Phorkid, seperti: Ekhidna (ular berbisa), Skylla (kepiting), Ladon (naga), the Graia (sang abu-abu) dan Gorgones (yang paling buruk).
Ceto memiliki nama lain seperti Krataiis yang berarti 'perkasa', Lamia (sang hiu) dan Trienos (ke tiga kali) >> Diambil karena ia yang menelan tiga raksaksa pusaran air. Krataiis juga biasa disamakan atau dihubungkan dengan Dewi Hekate dikarena sebutan Trienos dan Krataiis juga merupakan julukan Hekate. Lalu ada juga Sungai Kratakis di teritore Brutti, dekat Straits of Messiana di Italia
