Set Up Multiple Minecraft Servers On 1 IP

Why run multiple Minecraft servers on a single IP?

Customers are increasingly asking for an IP for every Minecraft server they own. This is mainly due to wanting to run each server on the default port (25565), so that there is no confusion for players on how to access the server. While that is a major plus for usability and lack of complexity for new players, it does add to the operational costs.

IP Space – There are very few IP blocks remaining in the world. As such, you can expect the price of a single IP block to rise 2-5 times as demand increases and supply runs out. DDoS Protection- Protection is typically sold per-IP as this is the way most companies assess "risk", and "usage" for their system. The server is considered a bigger target if it has multiple IPs. It will save you a lot of money to protect a single IP with multiple servers. (ReliableSite offers DDoS protection free of charge against attacks below 10 Gbps. However, this protection only applies to higher levels.
Minecraft Servers

Minecraft 1.3.1 now supports SRV Records, which eliminates port problems for players. You can set up multiple Minecraft servers on 1 IP, running on different ports, and set up a SRV record to automatically direct a player to the right port.

Example: mc1.reliablesite.net > 1.2.3.4 port 25565 mc2.reliablesite.net > 1.2.3.4 port 25566 mc3.reliablesite.net > 1.2.3.4 port 25567

name: the domain name for which this record is valid. TTL is the standard DNS time to live field. class: standard DNS class field (this is always IN). Priority: The priority of the target host. A lower value is more preferred. Weight: A relative value for records with the identical priority. port: The TCP/UDP port that the Minecraft server is connected to. target: The hostname of the machine providing the service.

If your DNS provider is asking for service, type _minecraft. If it requests for proto or protocol (or both), type _tcp.
