What made Roundup Ready and Roundup become what they now?
What is Roundup Ready? Roundup Ready is a trademark name for a patent-pending line of genetically modified crop seeds that are resistant to the glyphosate-based herbicide, Roundup. The crops are referred to as Roundup Ready.

Roundup was created by whom?
Glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in Roundup was first identified to be an herbicide in 1970 by Monsanto chemical scientist, John Franz. At the time, in the ag industry, the majority of herbicides were pre-emergent, meaning they were applied prior to the weeds and crops emerged. Glyphosate's ability to control large numbers of grass weeds and broadleafs was totally different. Its unique environmental characteristics (soil inactivation and rapid degradation, etc.) and toxicological qualities (extremely minimal levels of toxicity for mammals as well as other beneficial species) made it a revolutionary product.

Which year was it when Roundup the first time it was launched?

Our scientists discovered both plant and microbe genes that conferred resistance to herbicides. The USDA approved the first field test of Roundup Ready plants in 1987. The Roundup-resistant plant was genetically modified tomatoes which were resistant to Roundup. A few years later the Roundup Ready trait from bacteria was discovered and was isolated.

This renders them insensitive to the glyphosate. This means that farmers can apply herbicide to remove weeds without killing their crop.

As you can see, the introduction Roundup Ready crops in 1996 changed the way farmers and agricultural scientists work! Farmers soon realized the advantages of Roundup resistance and its adoption was very swift (today over 90% of the U.S. soybean cotton, corn, and canola acres use biotech-based traits that allow resistance to herbicides). Apart from reducing and improving weed management systems that increased yields for crops, Roundup Ready crops reduced tillage and reduced equipment costs and also allowed for more efficient harvests because of "cleaner areas" with less plants. The increased use of conservation tillage is an important environmental benefit.
