Both Runescape and Old School Runescape, the retro version of Jagex's longstanding MMORPG, are coming to Steam.
Jagex today confirmed the Steam release of both Runescape and Runescape 3. Runescape, colloquially known as Runescape 3 because it's the most modernized version of the game, will arrive on October 14. Old School Runescape, which uses the 2007 version of the game as a base, will come to Steam sometime in 2021.
Runescape, as most people know it, was first released in 2001 and was played through a browser. Jagex later developed dedicated clients, and Old School Runescape offers many third-party clients. However, neither Runescape version has been on a major retailer - at least not on PC. Both games have been available on mobile stores for quite some time. It's no coincidence that Runescape is coming on Steam as it nears its 20th anniversary.
Phil Mansell, CEO of Jagex, says that the company is on a mission "to bring the RuneScape universe" to more players around the world. "We have expanded the availability of the desktop version of our games since their arrival on mobile store shelves. This is an important step towards achieving this goal. We're thrilled to see RuneScape make its Steam debut on October 14th. Old School RuneScape is expected to arrive next year. It will allow even more gamers access to our rich and engaging living worlds.
While Runescape is technically free to play, Old School Runescape is a membership program that allows you to access the majority of Runescape's content. Jagex will now offer "membership plans" through Steam. Steam versions will also be able to support achievements. Additionally, their Steam community hubs can double as a new spot to receive announcements and update from the studio. You can see the newly created Steam page for Runescape (opens a new tab).
