Dundee Pupils Redesign City Waterfront With Minecraft

Dundee pupils redesign city waterfront with Minecraft

5 June 2015

Students from Dundee have created their plans for the future waterfront of the city using Minecraft.

Primary students have spent months using the popular game to make plans for the area, which is currently under a PS1bn regeneration.

Dundee City Council and University of Dundee led the project.

The appearance of the plans was taken into consideration, as well as the support for tourism education and job creation.

As well as the project involving primary 6 and 7 pupils from across the city, students from nine secondary schools have been taking place in a similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

Pupils worked in groups using XBox and Playstation consoles equipped with the game, connected to whiteboards in classrooms, reimagining and building their visions of the city's waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson from Dundee University's School of Education said that the game was "huge phenomenon" that engaged children.

He stated that "We must understand the digital spaces children use and how they can influence their learning."

"Games and applications like these are a great way for children to learn about design and the environment.

"The children that we have been working with in the past few months are extremely enthusiastic and have produced some great work." While some of it may be a challenge to city planners, that is part of the beauty of Minecraft: they can build anything.

Robertson was invited, along with 49 other teachers, to a Minecraft Educators Summit. This summit took place in Los Angeles and discussed how the game can be used in formal as well as informal learning.
