Minecraft is an open world sandbox video game originally made by Markus "Notch" Persson. It was operated by Mojang before it was sold to Microsoft in 2014. The sale cost 2.5 billion American Dollars. [18] The game is the most popular video game ever, with more than 200 million copies sold. [19]

Minecraft allows players to explore a blocky, 3D world. Many of these items, also called "blocks", are cubes. These include basic terrain, resources, such as dirt, stone and wood, as well as sand. You can also use crafting tables, blast furnaces and looms to make items such as stonecutters, stonecutters, and other interactable blocks. These can be used by players to make new items, including tools and armor, and different types of blocks. [20] Players then have the option to create structures with these blocks, including buildings and statues as well as pixel art and other pixel art.

There are three versions of Minecraft: Java, Bedrock, or Education Edition. Java is the original Minecraft. However, Bedrock is a more popular version due to its multi-platform nature. Java Edition, Education Edition, and Bedrock Edition are written in C++.

History[change | change source]

The original purpose of Minecraft was to test random generation for caves. Infiniminer, Zachary Barth's game, was the inspiration for Minecraft. Minecraft's first version for PC was released on May 17, 2009, and was called Cave Game. After having gone through beta and alpha versions of the program, the final version was released November 18, 2011. On October 7, 2011, an Android version was released. The iOS version was released on November 17, 2011 [21] Minecraft was originally created by Markus Persson. Persson, who started Mojang Specifications, a separate video game company, began to work on the project. Later, the company was renamed to Mojang. In 2011, a Minecraft version named "Pocket Edition", also known as Bedrock Edition, was released for Android and iOS. Persson appointed Jens "Jeb” Bergensten to be the main Minecraft developer in 2012.

Minecraft is also available on many other consoles. Minecraft was released on Xbox 360 as a free download via the Xbox Live Arcade. It was available for 1600 Microsoft Points ($19.99). Minecraft was released as a disc in 2013 for the Xbox 360/PS3. A Windows Phone version released on December 10, 2013. [22] Versions were released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September 2014. [22] Versions of the PlayStation One and PlayStation 4 were released in September 2014. On December 17, 2015, the Wii U edition was launched. In 2017, versions for the Nintendo Switch and the New Nintendo 3DS were released. The versions for the Xbox One (PS4) and Nintendo Switch (Nintendo Switch) were later combined to create Bedrock Edition.

Gameplay[change | change source]

The game starts with players being placed in random locations around the world. They can begin breaking blocks to collect resources, such as wood and dirt, which can be used later in the game. You can make new tools with resources, such as pickaxes. This allows you to gather stone from the caves. Different resources require different tools in order to collect them. For example, diamonds can only be collected with an iron pickaxe, or one of a better quality.

The game world is nearly infinite. As players explore it, the game makes new sections of the world using procedural generation. Different types of terrain are generated in different biomes. Different biomes have different blocks in them. For example, a taiga biome will have lots of spruce trees and snow, whereas a plains biome will have lots of grass. You can also find different structures throughout the world, such as mountains and villages.

Non-player characters, called "mobs", are used in the game. There are many mobs to Minecraft. Some are real-life animals, like cows, pigs, and sheep. Some are based in monsters, such skeletons or zombies. There are also some which do not exist in the real world in any way, and are unique to Minecraft, such as Creepers, zombie Piglins, and Endermen. Each mob can do different things. Players can slaughter cows to get leather. This can be used for items or beef that can then be cooked to make foods. The Creeper is a hostile mob that attempts to attack players. Minecraft It will move near the player and then explode, usually causing so much damage that it will kill them. From it's name it slowly approaches you and explodes giving you instant death if it gets too close.

Minecraft has very few goals. Players have the option to choose how they wish to play. They can choose whether to fight bosses like the Ender Dragon or the Wither Dragon. Or they can explore the world to build. If the player defeats the Ender Dragon, they can see the credits of the game. [24] Minecraft has many achievements called "advancements". These can be simple things such as sleeping in a bed for first time or more complex things such as discovering every biome within the game. Both boss fights, and advancements, are optional.

In addition to the default dimension the player starts in (called the "Overworld"), there are also two other dimensions in Minecraft - the Nether and the End. These dimensions can be accessed via special portals. The player can create Nether portals using obsidian, flant and steel. End portals however must be found within strongholds. Although it is not necessary that you travel to these dimensions, there are many items and enemies that cannot be found in the Overworld. The Ender Dragon can only be fought in the End. After that, the player can choose to go back to the Overworld or to the End islands to find an Elytra and an end city.

Game modes[change | change source]

Survival mode[change | change source]

In survival mode, players can gather resources found in the world to make lots of different items. Some of the items players can make include new blocks, tools, and armor. Players can, for example, turn wood into planks at any time. This allows them to make many things such as crafting tables and tools. Players can also place down these planks to build things, like houses.

Players have a health bar and a hunger bar in this mode. The health bar is represented by 10 hearts, while the hunger bar is represented as 10 steaks. Each heart and steak earns you two health points each and two hunger points. When players are attacked or lost all of their air underwater by monsters or fall from high places, enter lava or cacti or if their hunger bars are completely empty, their health bar decreases. Players can heal by staying still, drinking healing potions, and/or if they have a full hunger bar. Players will experience hunger if they move too fast, sprint too much, or walk too little. They will not be capable of sprinting if they are hungry. They can eat food to fill up their hunger pangs.

Monsters will attack players during the night. Players can build a house to defend themselves from these monsters. A player who sleeps in a mattress can skip the night and go straight to the next morning. Monsters close to the bed can make it impossible for them to fall asleep.

A player can only keep a certain amount of items in their inventory at any one time. If a player dies, their items are lost. If the items are found before they disappear, players will be able to get them back. Players can then respawn. This will send them back to the spawn point or the starting place of the game. Players can change their spawn point using items like beds. To respawn in their house, a player can place a mattress in it. In the Nether, players have a special block called a respawn Anchor that allows them to respawn in their area.

Players can play Survival Mode in four levels of difficulty: Peaceful, Easy, Normal and Hard. The more damage that monsters cause, the higher the difficulty. Certain mobs will also gain certain abilities at higher levels of difficulty. The default difficulty is set to normal for new worlds created by a player. There are no monsters that spawn on peaceful difficulty. Players cannot die by falling from high places, being caught in fire or lava, drowning and being trapped in blocks or the void.

Hardcore mode is similar to survival mode but it is set to the highest difficulty level, which cannot be changed. Also, cheats cannot be enabled when creating the world. This can only be done if the player uses the "Open to LAN” option in the game menu while playing. A player who dies while playing in hardcore mode can't respawn and can only use Spectator Mode. Cheats can be enabled so that the player can play in survival mode again. This game mode is only available for Java Edition.

Ultra Hardcore Mode is a special version that allows players to play hardcore mode, but they do not regenerate their health. This mode is accessible by creating a new world in Hardcore mode, enabling cheats via the "Open to LAN” option in the game menu, as well as using commands to turn off natural healing. The only way the player can regenerate health in this game mode is by using potions, golden apples, suspicious stews, and beacons.

Creative mode[change | change source]

In creative mode, players have unlimited items. This allows them to build whatever they like, without the need to look for resources.

They cannot die and have no health or hunger bars. However, you can kill a person in creative mode (if you have cheats on) with the /kill command in the Java edition of Minecraft. If they fall into an empty space, creative mode players can also go to death. Optionally, players can fly to reach places that they otherwise wouldn't be able to.

Spectator mode[change

In spectator mode, players become a "spectator". Spectators can look at the world, but not interact with it, meaning they can't place blocks or use items. They are invisible to other players.

Spectators have two options: they can fly freely around the world or they can view it through the eyes of other players or mobs. This allows them to see what the player or mob sees as if they were looking through the same eyes. This game mode can only be found in Java Edition or the Bedrock Developer Edition.

Adventure mode[change | change source]

Adventure mode is designed for community maps. The default mode of Adventure Mode is not able to place or break blocks and does not allow for any other actions.

source]

Education Edition is the version of the game most commonly used in schools. Some features of this mode are in Bedrock Edition.

Multiplayer[change | change source]

Players can play on the same Minecraft world together by using the multiplayer mode. You can connect to an online server either by entering the address (usually an IP address) or by playing on the local area network. A LAN game is only open to players who are on the same network. Much like the rest of Minecraft, players can choose what they want to do. You can choose to either fight each other or work together to survive. Multiplayer can be used for all game modes.

Minecraft Realms[change | change source]

Minecraft Realms is a special version of the original multiplayer. Mojang hosts realms, which is a multiplayer server. Players can rent them for a small fee. In Minecraft Realms, there are several "mini-games", which are maps/games created by popular Minecraft users.

Community[change | change source]

Minecraft has a very large community, with many fan forums and multiplayer servers such as Hypixel. The Minecraft community is also one of the largest on YouTube. Many people upload various types of Minecraft content to YouTube, such as parody songs, animations, gameplay, and more. You can also upload content to Forge.

Updates[change | change source]

Minecraft has had many new updates since it first released. These updates are usually announced before the release. They introduce many new features to the game such as new blocks and enemies, as well as new items.

Mojang releases smaller development versions called "snapshots" which players can choose to play on Minecraft Launcher. These snapshots contain a few new features and are being released by Mojang as developers work on the next version. This is done so that players can test new features before the full version goes live.
