Microsoft is expanding its world of Minecraft into a new action-adventure game, Minecraft Legends. The title will be released in 2023 and asks players to explore Minecraft as it is being invaded by an evil force.
Mojang studios, Microsoft's Minecraft developer, described the new Minecraft game as a "familiar but in-many-ways new" experience that is more focused on strategy than battle. The original Minecraft game, which was first released in 2011, requires players to build and explore as well as fighting off zombie-like creatures.
"You are the center of every battle you lead, fighting alongside your allies while giving them directions," Microsoft said, in an announcement teasing the game. Microsoft revealed that it collaborated Blackbird Interactive which also developed Homeworld, a space strategy video game.
Minecraft Legends is not a popular title. However, it does not guarantee success. Minecraft is one of the most beloved video games ever made. It ranks alongside Super Mario Bros., Grand Theft Auto, and Tetris. But its efforts to expand past that hit formula have been spotty.
According to Metacritic, Minecraft Dungeons was an action-adventure video game that was inspired by Minecraft. It received mixed reviews two years ago. GameSpot, a CNET corporate cousin gave Minecraft Dungeons an "excellent" review. GameSpot noted that Minecraft Dungeons' focus on fighting monsters was the biggest disappointment, and that it did not offer a new twist on the original formula for world building. "Rather than shift our expectations of what games can be, it's banking on its own popularity," GameSpot's Steve Watts wrote.

Microsoft announced Minecraft Legends at this year's annual summer videogame show, which is being held online. The game will be available for Xbox, PC, and cloud gaming next year.
