The Java Edition of Minecraft is often considered to be the quintessential Minecraft experience by many hardcore Minecraft fans. So it stands to reason that Mojang would offer a way to test upcoming updates before their official release. Mojang often releases updates and such for Minecraft: Java Edition weeks or even months before the cross-platform Bedrock Edition sees it.
The beta for Minecraft: Java Edition is different than other beta programs. Mojang releases snapshots instead of requiring you to sign up for a beta program. These are miniature versions that you can run in your own Minecraft installation, to test new updates. Snapshots are updated periodically so make sure to check back from time to time for the latest news.
How to use Minecraft Snapshots
Don't be afraid of the complexity of Minecraft: Java Edition's snapshots. While none of the betas for Minecraft is difficult to participate, the Java Edition is the easiest. Here's the step-by-step.
Open the Minecraft Launcher on your PC. This is the Java Edition Minecraft Launcher. It will need to be installed on your computer. Find the Installations tab at the top of the Launcher and click it. The Installations tab lets you manage different game version, including snapshots. 1. You will find a few boxes in the upper right-hand side. Click Snapshots to locate the box. After a few seconds, the latest snapshot should appear in the list of versions that you have to choose.
1. Once the snapshot is displayed, click the green Play button. The Minecraft Launcher will take a moment to prepare and download the new snapshot, then Minecraft should start up like normal.

1. You're ready to go! It really is that simple.
Wrapping up
Once you're done messing around with the snapshot, you can choose the vanilla Minecraft version to play it instead. The best thing about the Java Edition's beta version is that you don’t have to choose between the two. You can go back and forth as much or as little as you like without having to jump through hoops, enroll in different programs, or worry about enrolling in them all.
Are there any funny stories about times you attempted to play a snapshot game? What's been your favorite one? Let us know below!
