How To Set Up And Connect To Minecraft Servers For Bedrock Crossplay

Crossplay is available for Minecraft users on any console. However it has some limitations. Console players are restricted to connecting to Minecraft realms and sponsored servers. They can also connect to games created or shared by their friends. With a little more effort, you can get around these restrictions and connect with any server you wish. Server owners can also make it easy for anyone to connect to their Java server, regardless if they are using a different version of Java. Here's our guide to connecting to any server with any console. Also, how to set your own server to allow crossplay.

Connecting via Xbox

Console players may have trouble connecting to servers hosted by others. You will essentially need to trick your console into connecting to the server you want. Close any games you are currently running on your console and open up your network settings.

Click on the DNS settings option from your network settings. In the next window, change the IPv4 DNS Settings from Automatic to Manual. This will take you to a screen where you can enter a new Primary DNS. You will need to change the numbers at this screen to 104.238.130.180 before you can confirm the change. You will be taken to a second screen to set Secondary DNS. Enter the numbers into the boxes and click confirm. Serverstat You may need switch between the two Secondary DNS options at least once to establish a connection to the server.

Open Minecraft and restart your console. Head over to the Server list in Minecraft and click on any of the servers listed that have the message "Join to open Server List" below the name; it does not matter which one you choose. Instead of joining the server you chose, you will be taken to a new screen with several options. Click the Connect To a Server option to the top. You will be taken to a screen that allows you to enter the IP and port information for the server you want to join. We recommend you enable the Add server list option to save time and allow you to join again later.

Connecting via Nintendo Switch

Like with the Xbox version of the game, you will essentially need to trick your Switch into connecting to the server for you. Open Minecraft and log out from your Microsoft account. Once you have logged off, close Minecraft and open your Switch connection settings. Choose the WiFi network you want to use to connect to the server and click on the Change Settings option.

Scroll down to DNS Settings on the network settings screen. Change it from Automatic to Manual. This will give you two new options in the settings menu. Change the Primary DNS setting for 104.238.130.180, and the Secondary DNS setting for 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.8. If you have problems connecting to the Internet, you might need to switch between these Secondary DNS numbers. Save these settings and start up Minecraft.

After Minecraft is loaded on the Switch, log back in to Microsoft. After you log in, you can open Multiplayer. Next, go to the Server List. You can click on any server that's available. It doesn’t matter which one.

Instead of connecting directly with the server you choose, you will be presented with a new menu that lists many server options. You can now click on Connect to a server to add the IP address or port number to the server you wish to connect to. We recommend also enabling the Add to server list option so that you won't have to type this information in every time you want to join.

This process can be very picky. This may mean that you will need to change the Secondary DNS numbers. Log in and out of Microsoft to verify.

Connecting via PlayStation

Sony has made it very difficult to connect to non-sponsored Bedrock servers. You will need to setup a LAN gaming session on another device, preferably a laptop. Phantom must be downloaded to your PC and run on the same network as your PlayStation. Drag Phantom to your desktop. Next, open a command line prompt. You can either hit Windows + X or search for it using your computer's search bar.

Click and drag the Phantom program you downloaded earlier into your command prompt window. Hit enter to activate it. This will start the software. To autofill the prompt with your software's location, press the up arrow key or drag it into the command prompt. Instead of hitting enter and running this command, you'll need to add space and then type in the IP or port of the server to join. To make the software work, the IP and port must be connected by a colon. The command should look something like this: "...Desktopphantom (1).exe" play.gamepur.com:25565

After setting up Phantom, you can now connect with your PlayStation to the server. Open Minecraft, click on the Friends tab and scroll down to the bottom. You will see a LAN Game named Remote Server. To join the server you are interested in, click on the LAN Game.

Crossplay: Setting up your server

Paper

Installing plugins is necessary to allow anyone to join your servers, regardless of the version or console. To be able to install these plugins, you will need to be using a server API that is capable of running them. To run your server, we recommend that you use the latest version Paper. Paper is a Spigot-based fork. It is intended to reduce server latency, improve performance, create stable platforms for large communities and still run all of the plugins that are available for other Bukkitforks. It can also be easily optimized to make your server run as smoothly as possible.

Installing Paper will depend on how you are hosting your server. If you are using a company like Apex or Shockbyte, their support staff will be able to help you and will have guides available for you to reference. You can also set it up on your own computer.

Geyser and Floodgate

Floodgate and Geyser are essential for any server that wants to allow crossplay. These plugins allow players to connect to a Java server from Bedrock and use any plugins that you may have installed. Geyser allows players connect to the server directly without any configuration. Floodgate handles player authentication so that more people can join the server without any problems with their Microsoft or Mojang accounts.

It is easy to set Geyser and Floodgate up. Download the plugins via GeyserMC. Drag the.jar files to your server's plug-ins folder. Restart your server to generate the necessary configuration files. You will need to edit these files slightly so other players can join the server via Bedrock. Geyser offers an online editor to help you make changes to the configuration files. Just be sure to replace the old config files with the new ones you are downloading.

After the server is back up and running, go back to your plugins folder and find the newly created GeyserMC folder. Open it up and edit Geyser's config.yml file to suit your server's needs. We recommend that you change Remote port numbers and Bedrock port numbers so they match your server's port. By default, it is 25565. Also, change the remote port's address to 127.0.0.1. Change the authtype to floodgate.

After you make these changes to the config files, you can restart the server again for the changes to take effect. Anyone can now join your server regardless of what console they are playing on.

ViaVersion/ViaBackwards/ViaRewind

ViaVersion, a set of plugins that is very useful and should be installed on every server, especially if crossplay is desired. ViaVersion allows players who are using a different version or Minecraft to join the server. Players can still join and play on a server that is running 1.16.4 even if it is not running 1.13.2. This is also useful if you are running your server on an older version and want players with the latest stable release to be able to connect.

Installing ViaVersion is easy; just download each of the plugin .jars, drop them into your server's plugins folder, and restart the server. Like all plugins, ViaVersion will generate new configuration files for the plugins each time it starts back up. You can also make any changes that you feel are necessary.
