Features[]

The initial login screen requires users to log in with a Microsoft account. Users can also create a new account by clicking the link. Logins can be made in the "Settings” tab. If a user attempts log in with a Mojang Studios legacy Minecraft account, they'll be directed to migrate into a Microsoft account.

You can see the Minecraft Launcher "Settings", tab on the left, as well as a "News” tab.

The Minecraft Launcher's top right corner displays the user's Xbox Gamertag for the current account. This might differ from their Minecraft Java Edition username.[2]. Clicking on it will allow users to log in or log out of their active account. There is also a Help page that provides links to various resources.

The main "Play” section allows users to download and launch Minecraft: Java Edition. It also has an installation selection (which sorts installations by most recently played), the Java Edition username on right, and the most recent news from minecraft.net below.

- One can launch multiple instances of the game by pressing the "Play" button whilst the game is running. - If the device is not connected to the internet, the game can be run in offline mode, but only if the game has been initially downloaded. If the user isn’t logged in to an account that purchased the game, the “Play” button will appear as a “Play demo” button. This downloads and launches a demo version of the game. There is also a "Patch notes" section where the patch notes of the game's update can be seen, including the snapshots (if enabled).

Installations[]

Create a new installation.

In the "Installations" section, Custom installations can be created and edited. There are buttons to sort and search installations, as well as checkboxes to enable installations with "Releases", "Snapshot", and "Modded" versions of the game. Installations are stored in launcher_profiles.json (or launcher_profiles_microsoft_store.json when using the new Minecraft Launcher for Windows) in the game's directory (.minecraft).

There are two default installations: one for the "Latest release" (if enabled), and one for the "Latest snapshot". Both of these cannot be modified. Click the "New Installation" button to create a new installation. You can also edit an existing one by clicking on it. The "Play" button launches the selected installation. A folder icon takes you to the installation's games directory. The ellipses button contains the options to edit, duplicate, or delete an installation.

The following information can be modified on the create/edit page:

- Icon, by selecting one of the default ones or adding a custom one. Your custom icons must be a.png with 128x128 pixels size. - Name, by default called "". - Version. This includes access to older releases (if enabled). - Game directory, the location of where the game files are saved, the default being .minecraft. The location can be entered or selected by clicking the "Browse” link. - Resolution. This changes the game's window size. It can be accessed by selecting from a list of resolutions or typing in a custom one. - Java executable, by default uses the bundled java runtime. - JVM arguments such as heap size. The users used to be able to manually configure logging settings (see Debugging, wiki.vg) but this doesn't seem like it any longer. [3]

You can also download the server jar for a specific game by selecting the version from the drop-down list and clicking the "Server” icon next to it.

Backward compatibility[]

Selecting older versions from the create new installation screen.

The Minecraft Launcher allows you to play all older versions of the game and older snapshots by default. However, there are some older versions that were available before Release 1.0. To view these versions in your installations section, you must enable "Show historic versions of Java Edition" under the Minecraft Launcher Settings tab. These versions may have bugs and errors that are not in the newer versions. They are also unsupported as they are out of date and no longer supported. To avoid save corruption and other problems, it is recommended that you run older versions of the game in a different directory and backup worlds. [4]

Once historical versions are enabled you can access the following:

- Most beta version. - Most alpha version. - One infdev version. - Four classic versions. - Five pre-classic versions. [5]

Some of the issues with older versions include:

- Some sounds are wrong; bows, doors, and explosions use their sounds from RC1, even in versions released prior to it. The sounds are not working in Alpha 1.1.2_01 versions. Versions before 1.7 are missing skins. The reason is that earlier versions used a different server for skins. This server has since been retired. Capes may still work however. [needs to be tested] - The Minecraft Launcher doesn't correctly set the player’s name in Alpha 1.0.15 and Alpha 1.2.0 to Alpha 2.2.6. This means that everyone uses default names: "Player" followed with a random 3-digit number. Multiplayer is now difficult because players' inventory and locations are reset every time they launch their client.

- Players are always called "Player524" in Alpha 1.2.5 and Alpha 2.2.6. Playing multiplayer in these versions is impossible, as joining a server kicks off other players with the same name.

Online mode is no longer working in versions prior to Beta 1.8 as a side effect and because old authentication servers have been shut down.

Skins[]

The skins section

The "Skins" section allows the user to view and modify their in-game skin. The default skin is Alex or Steve.

You can apply skin to the skin library by clicking "Use". You can edit, duplicate, and delete the skin by clicking on the ellipsis icon. The default Steve and Alex skins are included in the library. These skins can be copied, duplicated, or applied but not removed.

Visiting this section without purchasing the game displays a button that redirects to the Minecraft: Java Edition store page.

Minecraft for Windows[]

The main "Play" section allows the user to download (if needed) and launch Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition) with the "Play" button, and also includes the user's Xbox Gamertag on the right, and a list of the latest news for the game from minecraft.net below.

- The game can be played offline if the device isn't connected to the internet. However, it must have been downloaded initially. Unsupported devices are notified with a link to a website for those devices. - If the user isn't logged into an account that has purchased the game, the "Play" button appears as a "Play demo" button that links the player to the Microsoft Store to download and launch the demo version of the game.

There are sections for FAQs and Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition) and Installation. You can also repair or uninstall the game from the "Installation" section. The patch notes section contains information about the latest patches.

Minecraft Dungeons[]

There are five tabs to the Minecraft Dungeons webpage: FAQ, Play and Patch notes. (On an unsupported platform, only Play, DLC and Patch notes are displayed.

Play[]

The default view for the Minecraft Dungeons section of the Minecraft Launcher.

The main "Play” section allows users to download (if necessary) and launch the latest Minecraft Dungeons version with the "Play” button. It also contains images from the game as well as a list of the most recent news articles from minecraft.net. This section also displays a notice that the Microsoft Store for Windows can be purchased separately. If the player does not have a supported platform, a small message is displayed at the bottom that states: Where is my play button? Minecraft Dungeons are not available on this platform.

DLC[]

The DLC tab can be found on the Minecraft Dungeons Page in the Minecraft Launcher.

The search bar has a filter option that allows you to narrow down the results for searching DLCs. Check the box to see the bundle and/or DLCs.

Each DLC is shown in a card-like structure with the DLC info on the left and a cover image on the right. The card also includes a slideshow.

FAQ[]

The FAQ tab in Minecraft Dungeons can be found on the Minecraft Minecraft Launcher.

When you press the FAQ tab, the FAQ section will be displayed. The FAQ section contains troubleshooting information and a link for the Minecraft Dungeons FAQ.

Installation[]

This section is accessible even if the game has not been purchased. A button redirects to the Minecraft Dungeons buy page. If purchased, it will display an uninstall button as well as a repair button.

Patch Notes[]

This section contains cards of patch notes.

Each card has an illustration on the top, and text below that identifies the patch notes. Click on the image to display the patch note.

Settings[]

The "About" section in the Minecraft Launcher settings.

Users can access the following sections in the main "General" section:

- Change the Minecraft Launcher language. There are 66 languages available. 2 joke languages are also available (as of February 2002). Use the beta version to download Minecraft Launcher. This requires restarting launcher to begin downloading if one is available. - Keep the Minecraft Launcher open while games are running. - Enable animations in the Minecraft Launcher, which are disabled by default to avoid potential motion sickness for some users. - Disable hardware acceleration. Options only for Minecraft Java Edition

- Open the output log when the game starts. - Option to automatically email Mojang Studios the game's crash logs. - Show historical versions of the game (versions prior to Release 1.0) in the version selector in the Installations section. Users can manage, delete, switch, or add their Microsoft accounts to the "Accounts" section.

The "About" section contains details about the Minecraft Launcher including its version, credits, and third-party licenses, as well as a list of patch notes by clicking the "What's New?" button.

Command line usage[]

The Minecraft Launcher can be invoked using the command line by typing %ProgramFiles(x86)%Minecraft LauncherMinecraftLauncher.exe in Windows or minecraft-launcher in either Mac or Linux.

The Help Message when using MinecraftLauncher.exe --help

As of version 2.2.25xx, the Minecraft Launcher has these command-line options available for Minecraft: Java Edition:

--demo - This launches a demo version of the game just like if it hasn't yet been purchased. -h --help – This option displays a help message about how to run it from the command line. --clean: This option deletes the "game", "runtime" folders and their contents from the current directory. --launcherui – This option presents the login screen. -w, --workDir - This option, followed by a path (relative or absolute), changes the location (and/or name) of the .minecraft folder. - This option can be used to create a portable version of the game. For example, --workDir(or --workDir=. can be used to make the Minecraft Launcher use the current directory (no matter what the current folder is called).

Uninstall the old Minecraft Unified Launcher[].

Source: "Uninstalling the Old Minecraft Unified Launcher" - Minecraft Help Center.

This applies only to players using Windows 10 or newer. Older versions of Windows are not able to use the new Minecraft Launcher for Windows. With the addition of a new launcher, you can uninstall the old launcher to remove any confusion between the two. For clarity, the new launcher is referred to as the "Minecraft Launcher for Windows" and the old launcher as the "Minecraft Unified Launcher".

How to uninstall the Minecraft Unified Launcher (old launcher):

1. Click the start menu for Windows (windows icon to the bottom left). 2. Type in "Add or remove programs" and click the top entry. 3. Search for "Minecraft Launcher". MINECRAFT-SERVERS The launcher to uninstall displays Mojang underneath the title "Minecraft Launcher". 4. Click the three dots shown to the left of the "Minecraft Launcher" title and select "Uninstall".

Only one launcher should now be installed. Run the Minecraft Launcher for Windows to ensure it still works; if it doesn't, reinstall using the Microsoft Store.

Launcher or game mods may need to be migrated or re-installed to the new Minecraft Launcher for Windows installation location before uninstalling the old launcher. For more information, contact the mod developer.

Trivia[]

- In the version 2.2.2529 Release Notes there is text that says: Tmwa, shi/JJ se Shimwa, shi mwa. Both Alpha and Classic Minecraft: Java Edition versions are listed as "old_alpha", even though they are not the same. [13] - The Minecraft Launcher doesn't store passwords locally. Instead, it uses an'refresh token'. - The current Minecraft Launcher is the eighth launcher for Minecraft: Java Edition, and the third that was built to automatically update itself. Mojang Studios receives reports about game crashes through Hopper. - The legacy Minecraft Launcher can be downloaded here (version 1.6.93, ~4.6MB as opposed to the modern launcher's ~85MB). However, the legacy Minecraft Launcher is incompatible with Microsoft accounts and was discontinued in Q2 2021 due to account migration. - In version 2.3.240, the pig on the Minecraft Launcher screen was given a crown in light of popular Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade passing away due to cancer.
