It is located in the %appdata%/.minecraft/versions/(current version) directory on Windows, the ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/versions/(current version) directory in macOS, or ../Minecraft/versions/(current version) on Linux. When using the latest version of the Minecraft launcher, it is named
.jar.
Strongcraft
It can either be opened with a file-archiving program or a Java descompiler.
Jar versions
The minecraft.jar folder contains the file. It is accompanied with a.json file which lists the version's attributes. Normal and snapshot versions are available to choose from via the Minecraft launcher. You can also download alpha version files and create your own version file to use for mods. Installing mods can only be done by creating a new version. The launcher keeps the normal versions synchronized.
Files in minecraft.jar
Many files can found in minecraft.jar. They can be categorized this way:
Texture files contain textures used in the game (all are in.png formats). - Class files: The compiled Java code Minecraft uses to implement program logic. These files (classes), are marked with "acq", or "qn" as they have been run through an "obfuscation" tool to hide names of methods, variable, and classes. You can still disassemble them to understand their functionality. - The METAINF directory: This directory contains information about the game files.
