How To Update A Minecraft Server

To update a Minecraft server, create a folder, select the files you want to keep, except logs, eula and Old Server, then place them in that folder. Select the files you want to delete. Next, download Minecraft server executables from the official site. Place the executable of the new server in the folder. Open the text document and change line to 'eula=true. Finally, copy the files you have created from the new folder to your original location.

Step by Step Guide

You will only need to update your Minecraft server's software, which is the.jar and.exe files. This will ensure that your existing settings, such as your world, are transferred to your new server.

First, navigate to the Minecraft server's files. Where the properties files and main executable is stored.

Create a new folder, it can be titled anything as it will only be used for updating the server and nothing afterward.

Select these files; the 'world' folder, the 'banned-ips' json file, the 'banned-players' json file, the 'ops' json file, the 'server' properties file, the 'usercache' json file, and the 'whitelist' json file. Place them in the newly created folder.

You will now have a folder called 'logs' and a text file called 'eula'. The main server executable is also left. These files are exclusive to your old server version. They will be deleted when you update.

Navigate to the Minecraft website to download the latest Minecraft server executable.

Start the new server executable by placing it in the folder where you used to store your old server files.

The server will not start. Instead, it will create new versions of the files that you have just deleted and a'server properties' file.

Open the text file titled 'eula.' Change the line that says 'eula=false’ to 'eula=true. This is Minecraft's End User License Agreement and must be agreed to before your Minecraft server will run.

Now that your new server is ready to run, take your files from the new folder you made and copy them back to where they came from. Keep an extra copy of your files in that folder in case something goes wrong.

Replace any files in your new folder. Once everything has been replaced, start your server executable.

It will display the normal window for server management and start loading your world. Your Minecraft server has been updated!
