Avanos Medical faces Class I recalls for its feeding tube system that has been linked to 23 deaths in the last year.

After seven years of failure in Avanos Medical, Avanos Medical’s Enteral Feeding Tube Placement Systems was recalled. FDA has issued the most serious recall order.

Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System contains an electronic stylet and an external receiver. When combined this system allows you to see the real-time placing of a medical feeding tube in the stomach of a patient.

Avanos issued a recall earlier in the year to all Cortrak*2 devices which were in use between January 2021 to January 2022. It was nearly 630 devices. The devices were distributed for the first time in April 2016 to the beginning of the year.

The safety incident isn't a recall, in the literal sense: Avanos is not asking healthcare professionals to send the device back to its manufacturer but rather to ensure they're using the devices correctly.

Avanos recorded more than 23 deaths and 60 injuries in 2015, the FDA stated. The most common injuries include respiratory failure and collapsed lung as well as lung infections. holes in the walls the esophagus and lungs.

According to FDA the Georgia-based firm reminded users in its March 21 Field Correction Notice to "confirm the use of nasogastric tubes and Nasoenteric tubes in accordance with institution policies". Avanos requested that users include the safety notice in the system's operation manual and confirm that they have notified Avanos that the change was approved.

Avanos announced that they would soon issue an updated labeling for the device. The label will contain the instructions for placing a tube according to their policies.

This is the FDA’s second warning about tube feeding into the gastrointestinal tract this year. In February, the FDA issued a safety advisory to parents and healthcare providers regarding the dangers of strangulation for children using feeding tubes.

Two deaths in 2021 were reported to the notice. Each time, the notice was followed by two deaths in 2021.
