Avanos Medical, a U.S. feeding tube placement Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company recalls Cortrak*2 enteral access device due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs that could have caused injuries and even deaths of patients. The recall covers 629 devices that were sold in the United States.
Avanos has marketed the Cortrak*2 Entraal Access System to help with the placement of a medical feeding tube. Patients may suffer injuries to their vocal cords, lungs, or trachea if a tube is not properly placed. The recall notification from Avanos Medical states that, since 2015 there have been 60 patient deaths and 23 injuries related to the incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tube when using the CORTRAK*2 access system. Avanos is the second warning that the FDA has issued in relation to intra-oral feeding tubes. Avanos Medical feeding tube placement In February, the FDA issued a warning for parents and healthcare providers regarding the possibility of strangulation if children are fed by feeding tubes. Two deaths from child strangulation took place in 2021 because of the tube being wrapped around a patient’s neck.
