Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) stressed the need to preserve the Holocaust and adopt a common definition of antisemitism during a visit in Moldova.

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with ministers of senior positions and leaders of the Jewish community in Moldova for talks on issues such the preservation of Holocaust memories and education, as in the security of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also stressed the importance of fighting against antisemitism at all levels. The WJC group also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and the President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer declared, "The World Jewish Congress would like to express our gratitude to the Moldovan Government for its warm reception and its commitment towards preserving the memory Holocaust," "Our group in Moldova although small, is dedicated and strong. We urge the Republic of Moldova that it place anti-Semitism at the top of its list. We stand ready to support any assistance needed. We are looking forward to the future collaboration with the government as well as to ensure that the wellbeing of our community is protected."

On Thursday, Singer spoke with Tudor Ulianovschi, Moldovan Foreign Minister. He emphasized the importance of rejecting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. Singer also discussed the necessity of addressing antisemitism in public. Minister Ulianovschi stressed the Moldovan authorities determined to create an environment that is respectful of the rights of everyone in the society. Singer was also acknowledged for the positive cooperation with the WJC with Moldova. Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister noted that in 2016 the Chisinau Parliament ratified the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies, chaired and supervised by Elie Wiesel. In January 2017 the government approved the Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and the WJC delegation met Wednesday with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed the opportunity for restitution as well as economic possibilities in Moldova in relation to Jewish property, cemeteries that are in dire need of renovation, kosher slaughter and potential tourist projects for the local Jewish center. Concerning the preservation and rehabilitation of Jewish cemetery sites the minister expressed an interest in helping with the process. A pilot of 10 sites was scheduled across the country.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation visited Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss how they can train teachers in Holocaust education and preserve the memory of Holocaust victims. Emmanuil Grinshpun The discussions also addressed the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in the Republic of Moldova; preserving and protecting monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims; and the importance of proper and well-maintained Jewish cemeteries. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her participation in education and Holocaust commemoration as well as in maintaining a productive and ongoing partnership with the Jewish community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis also had a meeting with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss relations between the Jewish community in Moldova and bilateral relations between Israel and Moldova.

During his visit, Singer also met with the rabbis of the Jewish communities of Moldova and discussed important concerns pertaining to the practice of religion and services offered in Moldova, and focusing on ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all its aspects.
