You'll Never Guess This Railroad Settlement Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia's Tricks
Railroad Settlements and Asbestos

In 1862, Congress passed the Pacific Railroad Act, which helped fund two transcontinental railroads by the granting of large amounts of lands for rights-of-way. Railroad workers who contract cancer due to exposures at work can sue employers under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA).

An Illinois jury handed down a $7.5 million verdict to a former Union Pacific trackman dying from acute myeloid leukemia. The man blamed his blood cancer on massive workplace exposures to creosote and benzene. Both were used to protect and waterproof railroad ties made of wood.

Creosote

Coal tar creosote can be described as an organic wood preservative used to shield railroad ties from sun, cold, heat, rain and snow. Workers are exposed to harmful chemicals and solvents, including benzene, in the process of applying of coal creosote tar. Benzene is a well-known carcinogen and can cause leukemia, myelodysplastic disorder and non-Hodgkin's lupus as well with other serious side effects like convulsions, changes to your heartbeat, liver damage anemia, bone marrow damage and cancer of the lungs and skin.

Our attorneys have successfully prosecuted multiple lawsuits against Union Pacific Railroad for exposure to coal-tar creosote. One of these cases ended in the amount of $7.500,000 verdict. The plaintiff was a track employee was diagnosed with acute myeloid cancer due to exposure to harmful chemical compounds on working for over 31 years. The jury concluded that the railroad did not provide him with personal protective equipment and exposed him to a variety of toxic chemicals including coal-tar-tar creosote and coal tar distillates.

Another claim involved the use of copper naphthenate substitute for coal tar creosote. Copper naphthenate, although less harmful to the environmental than creosote, is very dangerous. Colon cancer lawsuit settlements can cause lung, skin and nerve injury to the nerves, skin and lung. It also contaminates groundwater and soil with benzene.

Benzene

A colorless, liquid petroleum hydrocarbon, benzene is a component in the manufacturing of plastics, resins nylon and synthetic fibers. It is also used in diesel fuel and exhaust. Diesel fumes are commonly inhaled by virtually all railroad workers. Benzene is a carcinogen, and has been linked with leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

There is no safe level of exposure to benzene. It can be breathed in or absorption through the surface the skin. Exposure for long periods can harm the blood supply and trigger different health issues, including anemia, irregular menstrual cycles and fertility issues. There is also a link between benzene to certain types of cancer which include lung and breast cancer.

Inhaling benzene inhalation is the most hazardous. Inhaling Multiple myeloma settlements can lead to dizziness, headaches nose bleedings, and loss of consciousness. The benzene compound can also impair the immune system, which could cause infections.

A recent report has highlighted the high levels of benzene found in the air around two Chicago train stations. Commuters and railroad workers were exposed pollutant levels, which caused schools to shut down classes and cities to request residents to take shelter in their homes. Railroad workers, including car department employees, locomotive machinists pipefitters and electricians, often make use of benzene-containing items such as Safety-Kleen parts washers, CRC Brakleen as well as paints and thinners. The chemical is also used in printing solvents.

Asbestos

Early on asbestos was employed in the railroad industry. Asbestos consists of six naturally occurring silicate minerals with a fibrous structure. They were previously used in construction due to their an anti-corrosion, fire retardant and insulate properties. Inhaling these tiny fibers can cause serious health issues like lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. The signs of these health conditions can take 15 to 30 years to show.

The EPA has stopped asbestos mining and processing in the US however, it can be found in a variety of products. This includes various types of flooring felt, paper, and fake fireplace embers. When these materials are exposed to water or heat, they can release asbestos fibers. The fibers can also be released into the air when buildings are demolished or when homes are being renovated.

A recent study has shown that exposure to benzene for only five years significantly increases the likelihood of developing acute myeloid cancer (AML). If Colon cancer lawsuit settlements experiencing symptoms such as night sweats that are not explained, weight loss, or a decrease in appetite or loss of appetite consult your physician immediately. They can conduct an examination of your blood to look for AML.

The EPA settled a recent case against Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc. GWRSI operates locomotives that emit nitrogen oxides and fine particulates (PM2.5) when they are running on diesel fuel. This EPA settlement requires GWRSI to replace any of its current locomotives with new ones that meet EPA emission standards.

Diesel Exhaust

As long diesel fuel is used to power freight trains, railroad workers will remain exposed to exhaust. Diesel exhaust is a poisonous cocktail of chemicals, including carcinogens such benzene and carbon monoxide. It also contains nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

In reality, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust as a Class 1 carcinogen. Diesel exhaust can also trigger respiratory illnesses like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or bronchiectasis. A 2006 article published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives linked railroad worker employment and COPD rates.

When locomotives and railcars are running and idling they emit diesel exhaust. Idling engines emit gases, such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, in addition to diesel fumes.

The odor of diesel exhaust is usually present in locomotive cabs, where conductors and engineers are seated for up to six hours at one time. When people enter or leave the cabins, the engine and equipment release more exhaust fumes from diesel engines, creating a hazard for railway cancer and pulmonary problems.

Furthermore railroad mechanics are also exposed to diesel exhaust in roundhouses that are not ventilated and shops. They work in enclosed areas equipped with track equipment, locomotives and asbestos-insulated steam boilers.
