Minecraft sales have officially reached 200 million, with 126 million people playing the game each month. Microsoft is releasing the latest figures on sales as Mojang Studios celebrates 11 years since the initial Minecraft alpha build was released.
Microsoft has also seen a big increase in Minecraft usage during the pandemic. Minecraft saw an increase of 25 percent in new players last month and a 40 percent spike in multiplayer sessions.
The Minecraft sales reached 100 million in 2016 and the game hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. An increase in interest from YouTubers and nostalgia-induced playing resulted in Minecraft remain the top game in YouTube statistics for viewership last year.
Microsoft bought Minecraft maker Mojang around six years ago for $2.5 billion. At the time, it was selling more than 50 million copies across PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and various other platforms. Microsoft made a smart acquisition. The game's phenomenal sales growth and the game's momentum has kept players coming back for years.
Minecraft was born as a project for a bedroom that was initially released as a Java applet on a web forum. The game quickly became embraced by thousands of players who fell in love with its concept which let players create and construct structures out of blocks. It has been shared with millions of players by creating a huge community that shares Minecraft tricks and replicas of objects.
