Helen Chiang, the head of "Minecraft" studios, spoke to Business Insider by phone this week. She told us that the game currently has more than 112 million users per month. She said that "Minecraft has grown steadily over the last five years."

For over 10 years, the wildly popular game "Minecraft" has been a major cultural hit.



Despite other big games like "Fortnite", "Roblox" and "Roblox," "Minecraft", continues to quietly dominate.



As as of this week, this game now has more than 112 million players per month.



This is an increase of more than 20 million players from the announcement in October 2018 by Microsoft. This is a significant increase considering that the game has been in existence for over 10 years. This includes gamers on all game consoles, mobile devices, computers, and the educational version.



Not surprisingly "Minecraft", while it is free on many platforms, isn't free.



The thousands of new gamers "Minecraft" added in the last year bought the game in some way or another, regardless of whether it was a direct purchase of a physical copy from a store or as part of Microsoft's popular Game Pass subscription service or a digital purchase.

Early success has persisted



The game has been a famously popular phenomenon since the beginning of its life "Minecraft" was initially a work-in-progress game, made by a single man (Markus "Notch" Persson). It had basic graphics and controls. It was only available for PC. It was prone to breaking because it was an unfinished game that was being created by a single person.



Yet, millions of people still played and bought the first version of "Minecraft".



The tech world was stunned and confused when Microsoft purchased the game in 2014 for $2.5 Billion.



However, this initial success has remained under Microsoft's watch for the past five years.



"What we've found is that it's a game that people keep coming back to," Helen Chiang (Minecraft) director of the studio, said to Business Insider in a telephone interview this week. It may not always be the most well-known, because there are plenty of amazing games to choose from but it's one that players are happy to revisit.



What is it that makes 'Minecraft" such a huge success?



So, why is "Minecraft" so popular?

"Minecraft" provides endless building blocks and a blank canvas; it's up to you to come up with something amazing or funny, or related, or whatever using the tools it provides. The tools are blessedly user-friendly and so are the methods for employing those tools.
