When Metro announced that it would open a store selling merchandise branded by Metro -- ranging from mugs to tees, cellphone cases adorned with DC map of the train and logos -- the internet rolled its eyes. Many of the haters took to criticize the transit agency's chronic delays and dilapidated infrastructure, and questioned why anyone would spend their hard-earned cash on the price of a pair Foggy Bottom sweatpants.
Jawauna greene, director of WMATA's department of marketing, wasn't deterred by this satire. She was of the opinion that merch can be a useful tool for making people more accepting of the agency. In the past she was a part of a group that developed new advertisements and a revamped slogan to alter the way people viewed Metro.
Lisa Zakarian is a former Chicago deputy mayor, and a supporter of transit-oriented development. She thinks that retail options, such as the M Shop, could be successful.
M Shop is a small store in the Metro Center station, featuring a handful of products that feature the "Metro" logo as well as the word "home." It also sells items like glasses, umbrellas, and dishes which are all decked in the transit agency's color scheme. The M Shop only opens a few times a day and it sells out quickly.
Although the M Shop isn't the same as the larger retail spaces that many malls offer It could serve as an example for other transit agencies looking to generate revenue and improve their image. Retailers can make use of the mezzanines that are located between train platforms and stations to draw customers in, while also providing a safe and secure environment for riders.
Anyone who runs a business will admit that things don't always go according to plan. Metro is not alone in having the odds stacked against it. metromerch .
