I like minecraft, a lot, on occassion. It's in need of some tweaks to get me to really enjoy minecraft. I'm going to document these now:
First, you'll need the mcpatcher program, which allows us to use HD texture packs and install mods. Get it here: https://github.com/pclewis/mcpatcher/downloads

This should give you an easy GUI. We'll get to this in a minute.
Next, we must install the proper mods.

- ModLoader: I don't remember why I've got this installed, but presumably it's due to a legitimate reason. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/75440-v131-risugamis-mods-preliminary-updates/
Once you have all the mods installed, launch Mcpatcher. Steve larese Add a variety of mods (Mods > Add to the menu). You can point it to your minecraft.jar. It is located in /.minecraft/bin/
Check that only the following modifications are checked, and that they appear in the same order. To rearrange them, use the arrows at lower right of the GUI
1. AutoSwitchMod
2. ModLoader
3. OptiFine
4. Custom Colors
5. Random Mobs
6. Connected Textures
7. Better Skies
Then , click the patch. Mcpatcher may complain, but you are able to click yes.
Finally, we need a good texture pack. I like this one: http://bdcraft.net/download-purebdcraft-texturepack-for-minecraft, 128 bit. Much higher and Minecraft doesn't seem to handle itself very well. Download it and save the .zip to ~/.minecraft/texturepacks. You should be able to choose it from the menu in game.
