Black holes aren't bad.



But they are fantastically weird and powerful places. Astronomers think there are 100 million of them. They are so dense that no light can escape their grasp. Scientists now have evidence to show that one of these black holes is moving rapidly.



This kind of black hole is created when a star (around 20 times as big as the sun) explodes and collapses into an intensely compact object. It is the natural development of all things in our universe.



These are just wandering stars. "Those wandering stars turn into black holes that are constantly moving," Kailash Sahu (an astronomer at Space Telescope Science Institute) who was the lead researcher on one study on this detection, told Mashable.

"The Milky Way should be filled with black holes," said Fabio Pacucci an astrophysicist with the Center for Astrophysics - Harvard & Smithsonian who played no part in the new research.



In addition, there may be a profound number of black holes in our galaxy, but they're still far from our solar system - because space, like our galaxy, is vast. This rogue black hole is located a little over 5,000 light years away (one light-year is approximately 6 trillion miles). According to the research team the closest dark hole is around 80 light years away from us. To put it in perspective, the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is four light years (or approximately 24 trillion miles) away from us.



These black holes roam the galaxy in a nomadic fashion, but it's important to remember this. Our solar system is moving around the middle of the Milky Way (home to a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A*) at over 500 000 mph (828,000 km/h).



Sahu said, "Everything is kinda wandering There is no real stationary."



These rogue black hole have been created by extreme destructive explosions and are now traveling on a more random path through space. If it passes close to a solar system, a nomadic blackhole could cause disruption to the orbits and movements of planets. Black holes do not eat all the cosmos. Douglas Gobeille, an astrophysicist at the University of Rhode Island and black hole researcher, explained to Mashable earlier in the year that black holes aren't vacuum cleaners.

Black holes don't emit any light. What can astronomers do to see the impossible?



To observe this phenomenon over a long period of time, astronomers did something clever. Black holes, extremely dense objects, warp space, like bowling balls sitting on the mattress. Utilizing the size of a school bus Hubble Space Telescope, the team of researchers diligently watched for an extremely dense object (like the black hole) to move in front of the distant star. Microlensing is a form of observation that allows the observation of tiny objects in space.



What's more The Hubble telescope was able to measure how much light the black hole reflected, which required observing small changes in light. Hubble is a great instrument for this kind of sensitive observation. It orbits over Earth so its images aren't blurred or altered by the atmosphere.

In the end, observations of warped and deflected light provided astronomers with the information they needed to determine the black hole's mass, distance, and beyond. "It's similar to placing the black hole on an scale," Sahu explained. They found this lone wanderer in the black hole has seven times the mass of the sun. (Some 30% of wandering black holes travel alone, while others have companions.



Mashable was told by Pacucci, an astrophysicist "This is an amazing detection."



However, one question is still unsolved. There is a chance that the object observed could be an extremely dense object that can warp time, such as the neutron star. This is the collapsed core of an exploded star. (Neutron stars are so densethat a "sugar-cube-sized amount of material would weigh more than 1 billion tons, which is about the same amount as Mount Everest!" NASA explains.) Another team of researchers discovered the object was smaller, at approximately 1.6 and 4.4 times the mass of the sun. A neutron star would be more likely to be an object 1.6 times the size of the sun.



However, there is another evidence that suggests that the object that was observed is an infrared dark hole. The object in question did not change the light color of the background star. The two light sources could have mixed if it were neutron stars. However, there was no color change.



These black holes are traveling at around 100,000 mph, and it's difficult to locate them. But in the near future advanced space telescopes, like NASA's Roman Space Telescope are expected to detect many more of these curious objects in the deep, deep cosmos.
