Benzene, Butadiene, and Other Carcinogens on the Railroad
Many railroad workers are exposed on the job to carcinogens like benzene and. You could be entitled to compensation when you've developed leukemia, a serious illness.
Leukemias develop in blood-forming tissues like bone marrow, and lymphatic tissue. CLL (chronic lymphocytic Leukemia) is one of the four major types of adult leukemia.
Benzene
It is a chemical that can be absorbed through inhalation or through the skin. It is a contaminant of oil which is used to create plastics, nylons, and synthetic fibers. It is also a component in dyes and lubricants. It is a recognized carcinogen that causes leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) myelodysplastic disorders and lymphomas.
Railroad workers are exposed to benzene by using mineral spirits, solvents and degreasers. When working on locomotives and freight cars workers are exposed to exhaust fumes from diesel engines and. Railroad workers are at a higher risk of developing chronic lymphocytic Leukemia because of the exposure.
Numerous epidemiologic studies have found an increase in the risk of leukemia with increasing exposure to benzene. A meta-analysis of 22 recent studies reveals summary estimates of the impact of benzene on AML and Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia(ALL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia(CLL).
The meta-analysis shows that occupational exposure to benzene increases the chance of developing these leukemias. The results for AML, CLL and ALL were less favourable. This may be due to a lower percentage of reporting for these subgroups, or due to the lack of dose-response responses with increasing exposures. The meta-analysis didn't find any evidence of bias in the publication.
Asbestos
Asbestos, a fibrous mineral has been used to create thousands of industrial products. Its resistance against fire, heat and corrosion makes it a perfect material for railroad locomotives and other machinery. However, asbestos can pose danger to health when workers are handling it. When exposed to the material asbestos fibers, they break down into microscopic fibers that can become airborne. They are then inhaled and then lodge in the lungs of people. These can cause a number of serious diseases, including mesothelioma.
Asbestos fibers could cause irritation to the lung lining when they enter the lung. This irritation could lead to the formation of collagen which will harden over time, forming plaques in the pleural cavity. This problem can cause chest discomfort and breathing problems.
Another type of lung damage that is caused by asbestos exposure is fibrosis, which results in scar tissue that can hinder breathing capacity of an individual. If left untreated the condition can become fatal.
Contact a FELA lawyer immediately if you are a railroad worker who has been diagnosed with a condition that is related to asbestos. A mesothelioma lawyer with experience can assist you in filing an action for compensation. To win a claim, you must prove that exposure to a toxic substance while on the job caused your condition. FELA lawyers frequently work with industrial safety experts known as industrial hygienists. They review the products used in the railroad workplace and determine if the railroad company was following proper safety guidelines for employees.
Diesel Exhaust
Diesel exhaust is just one of the many carcinogenic fumes, as well as materials that railroad workers are exposed to on a daily basis. Exposure to diesel exhaust has been linked to lung cancer as well as other serious occupational illnesses in railroad workers, such as mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis. Inhaling the exhaust of engines and particulates could lead to long-term health issues that are difficult to treat.
Mesothelioma settlement is used in locomotives and the cab of a locomotive is tiny with no ventilation. Diesel exhaust is inhaled by railroad workers, and it may be dragged back onto their clothing and the workers when they exit the locomotive cab. Railroad workers working in shops and yards can also be exposed to diesel exhaust, because they often come into contact with train and locomotive equipment.
Diesel exhaust is known to contain mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. These chemicals can cause damage to the respiratory system as well as blood and bone marrow. In a research study that analyzed several hundred workers who were regularly exposed to diesel exhaust, researchers found that those with the longest time of exposure were at risk for the most lung cancer.
Even after adjusting for smoking and other causes the mortality rate for lung cancer was significantly higher in railroad workers exposed to diesel emissions. The Lyon Firm is investigating claims from railroad workers who claim to have been ill from exposure to diesel exhaust and other industrial toxic substances.
