Light Therapy for Dementia Patients
The number of people living with Alzheimer's and dementia is growing all the time. The dreadful diseases are debilitating for those that suffer from them, and even more so for their loved ones. As a result, the research community is constantly looking for solutions that can cure these diseases or at least treat their symptoms. One treatment that has recently started to show promising signs is red or near-infrared light therapy.

The studies exploring this type of therapy use a headset that transmits near-infrared light through the skull and nostril, reaching right to the brain itself. This is called photobiomodulation, which uses the power of light to change how the brain functions and improve its health. The early studies have shown encouraging results, including better cognitive function, a lessening of depression and anxiety, and more sleep and fewer angry bursts of behavior.

Many of these studies use bright white light for a 30 min. dose each morning (Golden Reference Golden, Gaynes and Ekstrom2005; Pail Reference Pail, Huf and Pjrek2011). The wavelengths of the light vary from 380 nm (violet) to 760 nm (red), and are commonly known as 'full-spectrum' bright light. This light enters the eye, is converted into neural signals by the photopigment melanopsin in the retinal ganglion cells, and is transmitted via the retinohypothalamic tract to the suprachiasmatic nucleus. trackers for alzheimer's patients This is the part of the hypothalamus that controls circadian rhythms, activity, sleep and emotional patterns.

The majority of the studies have a very high level of adherence, with most of these patients receiving treatment five days a week for 30 minutes each day. For some individuals, evening administration has also been shown to be effective and may improve night-time sleep and reduce agitation (Shirani Reference Shirani and St Louis2009; Hanford and Figueiro2013; Chang Reference Chang, Liu and Chen2018). dementia wandering prevention
