This apartment design style is still modernist and minimal but with soft tones, ergonomic designs, and conscious consumerism. Industrial style appreciates the visual appeal that lies within utilitarian objects, metal and wood surfaces, and neutral tones. The schematic design for an unbuilt project at Cherry-brook explored the relationship between inhabiting the house and revealing the surrounding bushland that in 1980 was a landscape of sandstone, eucalypts and flowering native plants.


Each courtyard has its own qualities and can extend the useable area of the adjacent interior room. Timber trelliswork for climbing plants forms additional enclosure and gives shade to the southern courtyard. The strategy was for a separate but attached single-level, timber-frame structure that allowed for construction of exteriorand interior rooms, having varying degrees of enclosure. Conceptually, the verandah frame of the original house becomes a free element and extends beyond the house to generate a spatial field in the landscape. This provides optional arrangements to either side of the wet zones to create areas that can be modified as family dynamics change over time, from accommodating small children, teenagers or resident elderly parents.

The more private rooms-the bedrooms, bathroom and study-are ordered on the periphery of the central room. The design responds to a request for assistance in ordering the program for a house on a rural property with existing buildings. The site conditions, program and built context were briefly described by correspondence.

The carefully curated interior responds to the strong architectural envelope, the transitions are so well considered that they are almost seamless. Framed profile form connections between adjacent spaces and make continuous transitions from room to room. The seamless interplay of texture, colour, form and materiality are woven through the interior creating sophisticated and timeless interior. As a result, this coastal home celebrates natural light, generous colour, with open space living room has brought the home a very cohesive look. Externally, the extended gable timbers connect the house to the surrounding bush, augmenting the height of the structure and drawing the eye upward. The interspersed courtyards have varying degrees of enclosure and allow cross-ventilation to all rooms.

The plan has four wings arranged pinwheel fashion around a central entertainment court. Each wing has a single bank of rooms, for cross-ventilation and sunlight, with smaller courts adjacent to private rooms providing intimate outdoor areas. Walls along the north courtyards are retractable louvres and lattice screens for light and ventilation. In its construction, the project demonstrates the versatility of hardwood timber, with its expressive capacity to create scale hierarchies and relations through dimensions that span in size from matchstick battens to pillar logs. The house form is characterised by the complex of shingled gable roofs set above a lower plane of pergolas and courts planted with tropical vines. The brick house was constructed on a level site on a large outer-suburban property north of Brisbane. Two wings form an L-shaped plan around a central courtyard closed on the third side by a garage, and partially screened on the remaining side by two raking brickwork walls flanking the entry path.

The conditions at Lytton Station suggested that the house should have a single gable roof that could be inflected through the underpinning geometry to distinguish the house from the skillion-roofed service buildings on the property. The roof is corrugated galvanised iron sheets, and the timber-frame walls are clad in tallowwood. A sloping field in Pollock Park, part of the Old Pollock Estate originally belonging to the Maxwell family.
