Nikolaj Vasiljevič Gogolj je utemeljitelj ruskog realizma.Svjetski je slavan ruski humorist, dramatičar i romanopisac. Rodio se 31. ožujka 1809. godine u mjestu Veliki Soročinci u Ukrajini.Preminuo je u Moskvi 4. ožukja 1852.Školovao se u Poltavi, Nježinu i Petrogradu. Neko vrijeme je bio odgojitelj plemićke djece u Petrogradu.Zahvaljujući Gogolju došlo je do apsolutne prevlasti proze nad poezijom u ruskoj književnosti i zato Gogolja treba smatrati »ocem ruske prozne književnosti«. Gogoljeva najpoznatija djela su "Mrtve duše","Kabanica".Svi časopisi kojima je poslao poemu reagirali su porugom, pa je razočarani Gogolj spalio sve preostale primjerke i zakleo se da nikad više neće napisati pjesmu.
