INTRODUCTION

Good morning to our respected professors and classmates!

I am Lui Lipnica, I will be presenting today a Pecha Chucha of my chosen leader.

But before I proceed what is first a leader for me?

Which I chose Mother Teresa and she quoted "Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail…"

Who is Saint Teresa of Calcutta?

known as Mother Teresa was
* Name: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu
* Occupation: a Catholic Nun and was an Albanian-born Indian Roman Catholic missionary
* Born: August 26, 1910 in Uskub, Ottoman Empire (now Skopje, North Macedonia)

( 2nd slide )
* St. Teresa is Best known for: as Humanitarian. This means she did things to help out other people. Her entire life was fully devoted in helping and fighting for the rights of the poor, the sick, the needy, and the helpless.

( 3rd slide )
Where did Mother Teresa grow up?

Agnes grew up in the Roman Catholic Church and decided to devote her life to God at an early age. Her family was of Albanian descent. Her father died when she was eight and she was raised by her mother.

At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. She knew she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ.

( 4th slide )
When she turned 18, Agnes joined the Sisters of Loreto to become a missionary to India.

Before she could go to India, she had to learn English. She spent a year in Ireland learning to speak English at the Loreto Abby.

A year later, Agnes began her missionary work in Darjeeling, India. She learned the local language, Bengali, and taught at the local school.

( 5th slide )
In 1931, she took her vows as a nun and she chose to be named after Thérèse de Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries, but because a nun in the convent had already chosen that name, she opted for its Spanish spelling– “Teresa”. She taught for many years in India becoming the headmistress at a school in eastern Calcutta.

What did Mother Teresa do?

When she was 36 years old, Mother Teresa felt the call from God to help the poor of India. She received some basic medical training and then set out to help the sick and needy. This wasn't an easy task in 1948 India.

She had very little support and, while trying to feed and help the poorest of the poor, she herself was constantly hungry and even had to beg for food.

( 7th slide )
Mother Teresa’s work was not easy. The conditions of the streets were deplorable and the poor she sought to help had no way out of their situations. She took it upon herself to provide those in need with a path forward.

She did this by teaching them valuable skills that gave them a way to earn money and get back on their feet.

( 8th slide )
She taught them tailoring, soap-making, basket-weaving, and candle-making, so they could earn money for themselves and their families.

Driven by compassion and a strong sense of duty, Mother Teresa began to teach those she encountered how to care for themselves and others during illness. She opened a hospice in Calcutta to care for people suffering from cholera, leprosy and tuberculosis who were too poor to afford medical treatment and cared for them with her own hands.

Mother Teresa’s Calling

It was during her time teaching at the Loreto convent school that Teresa became aware of the immense suffering of those around her.

While traveling on a train from Calcutta to the Himalayan foothills for a retreat, Teresa experienced what she later described as “the call within a call.”

( 10th slide )
The idea that all people are God’s children gripped her, and she heard Jesus telling her to quit her teachings to help those most in need by living amongst them.

Inspired by Jesus’ words in the Gospel, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” Mother Teresa worked to serve “the poorest of the poor” on the streets of Calcutta.

( 11th slide )
After only a few years, the Missionaries of Charity had opened an orphanage, daycare center and a number of schools throughout Calcutta, all run by volunteers working under Mother Teresa’s guidance.

She gave away all of her possessions and lived in dire poverty with them in hopes of being better able to serve them.

Missionaries of Charity

In 1950, Mother Teresa formed a group within the Catholic Church and founded the Missionaries of Charity in India and for over 45 years, she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying. - add 1 sentence

( 13th slide )
She described the purpose of the Missionaries of Charity as an organization that would take care of "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone".

( 14th slide )
At the time of her death she ran over 500 missions in over 100 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; family and children’s counseling programs; orphanages and schools.

( 15th slide )
It wasn't an easy task to build such an organization and to keep the focus on the poorest people. She worked almost up until her death on September 5, 1997 in Calcutta, India.

Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions.

( 16th slide )
Including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of International Peace and Understanding (1972). She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.

Fun facts about Mother Teresa
* Mother Teresa has been beatified by the Catholic Church. This is a step on the way to becoming a Saint. She is now called Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.
* She never saw her mother or sister again after leaving home to become a missionary.
* Albania's International Airport is named after her, the Aeroporti Nene Tereza.

( 18th slide )
* She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Rather than have the traditional Nobel honor banquet, she asked that the money for the banquet be donated to the poor of India.
* She once traveled through a war zone to rescue 37 children from the front lines.

( 19 th slide )
* Mother Teresa of Calcutta received numerous awards for all her charity work including the Presidential Medal of Freedom which is the highest civilian award from President Ronald Reagan of United States.
* It takes her around 9 years of service to become a full member of the Missionaries of Charity.

( 20th slide )
With the above accomplishments of Mother Teresa, I admire her so much for her benevolence and for being selfless just like a Mother was a natural leader in which it comes out of her. And that is exactly what she did. She is a situational leader. She made sure that people were being cared for according to their needs. Mother Teresa has been an icon of love and care.
