He served as President of the SA Society of Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeons for 2 phrases and was President of the College of Maxillo-Facial Surgeons of South Africa for three phrases. He served as a Senator of the College of Medicine of South Africa for greater than 15 years and as its Honorary Registrar for 3 years. He chaired the College's Examinations and Credentials Committee at the time of his demise.

He graduated with firstclass honours from Jeppe High School at the age of 15 in 1955. After, he enrolled at Wits in 1956 and commenced the more-than-50-year profession at the university. He was a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Stanford and Stockholm Universities, and the University of Picardy Jules Verne. He amassed a powerful publication report and he coordinated first-rate postgraduate programmes all through his academic profession.
