This ingenuity – which he noticed as a present from God – was nurtured and developed via his time at Wits and he was very appreciative of this. He was additionally a watercolour artist and composer, and spent many hours on the piano – an instrument he adored. A preserver in addition to creator, he helped to compile an inventory of 600 heritage buildings for the Institute of Architects. Papert leaves his fourth spouse, Suzanne Massie; his daughter, Artemis Papert; stepchildren Robert Massie, Susanna Massie Thomas and Elizabeth Massie; brother, Alan Papert; and sister, Joan Papert. Papert went on to the University of Geneva, the place he worked with the kid development pioneer Jean Piaget. He was UCT’s University Orator for a time and a proficient singer, and published a group of humorous rhymes called General Tso’s Chicken and the Seven Deadly Sins.

After his retirement from Wits he spent 15 years writing book critiques for the Financial Mail, and then worked for Van Hulsteyns as a part-time conveyancer. Neville Curtis, former president of the National Union of South African Students, died in Tasmania at the age of fifty nine. Neville was central to the emergence of radical white student opposition to apartheid within the early Seventies and was banned by the government in 1973 and fled to Australia a year later. Curtis was born in Johannesburg on 16 October 1947, he attended Jeppe Boys High School before going to Wits University to do a BA degree in political research.
His background was in maths and engineering, and his main curiosity developed around the issues of fibre-reinforced materials, which he utilized as chair of the Department of Physics on the University of Bristol in 1969. He was able to make valuable contributions to the work of the group’s work on polymers. He also fitted in nicely in each undergraduate teaching and in the educating of the MSc course on the physics of materials. When he lastly stopped working on the age of 70, he turned his attention to supporting his spouse, Alison, within the ultimate years of her career as a trainer of French, accompanying her first to Devon and later to Berlin. In his dealings with his colleagues he was noted for his curiosity in selling range, the generosity with which he gave of his time, his honesty and integrity and his refusal to bow to political expediency.
In 1943, in his last 12 months of medication, he was elected president of the university pupil council. A year later Gonski joined the South African Army as a medical officer. He was posted to the Middle East in World War II and achieved the rank of captain in the Medical Corps.
John labored at Themba Hospital in Mpumalanga for a year earlier than transferring to Cape Town. Persistent lymphoma forced his final retirement from medicine and the couple returned to the UK in 1998. Elsbeth Rita (Esmé) Joubert (born du Preez) (MBBCh 1947) was the daughter of a station master and housewife in Nuy, near Worcester in the Western Cape. She matriculated in 1940 at Helpmekaar School in Johannesburg and received a scholarship to check drugs at Wits. She married Mauritius Joubert (MBBCh 1947) and they both specialised in neurology. They started the neurosurgical department at Wentworth Hospital in Durban and Dr Mauritius started the Brown School for youngsters with epilepsy.
