Mona May's Clueless Costume Design Changes the way we think about generations
Clueless is one of the most popular 90s-style films. Alicia Silverstone's Cher Horowitz may not have done well in work or in lovemaking, but she compensated for that in her style. And her outfit, created by costume designer Mona May, is a treasure trove of inspiration for anyone who enjoys shopping (which is pretty much everyone). May was kind enough to chat with me about the 25th anniversary of the film and how her designs have a timeless appeal. She reveals the motivation behind Cher's iconic costumes and why this film will always be popular with teenagers.

The cult classic was an early glimpse at the power of teen girls to make an impact and enjoy themselves. It's also among the few fashion films today that do not glorify cruel girls. This makes it an essential film for every girl in the teen years. What I find fascinating about this film is the message it communicates to women about their relationship. Costumes play a crucial role in telling a story and illustrating the evolution of characters. For example, I counted and discovered that Cher wears 42 distinct outfits in the film. It's like a new outfit every 2 minutes! May says the mix of styles--grunge-meets-girlie, luxury-meets-high street--also adds to the appeal.


May has wrangled the wardrobes for some of Hollywood's biggest fashion movies--including Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, The Wedding Singer, Enchanted, and Never Been Kissed. However, she says she credits Clueless with starting her career as it was her first feature films. And she had to work fast, since the film was shot in just eight weeks.

Cher is wearing a red bodycon minidress when she is held up by a man at an Los Angeles party. The person who attacked her wants her to lay down, but she protests by saying "This is a dress by Azzedine Alaia." May declares that she knew of the late designer before she was involved in the production and she was looking to give Cher's character a distinctive Los Angeles vibe.
