Diagnosing Tonic Clonic Movements
Tonic clonic movements are a type of epilepsy that involves jerking or twitching of limbs. These seizures can be treated with medication, nerve stimulation, and surgery. However, they can be confusing to diagnose. Unlike other types of seizures, tonic clonic movements may be difficult to distinguish from other neurologic conditions.

There are two stages of tonic clonic movements. The first stage occurs immediately before the second and includes loss of consciousness. During this time, the person experiencing the seizure may become confused, physically exhausted, or sad.

During the second stage, the person experiences a tonic phase of muscle activity followed by clonic jerking or twitching. In most cases, these seizures resolve spontaneously. A small number of patients may have prolonged seizures that last more than a few minutes. If this happens, the person should be put in a recovery position to decrease the risk of asphyxiation.

In order to make the diagnosis of tonic clonic movements, the patient should be evaluated carefully. Some symptoms that may indicate a seizure are: dilation of pupils, blurred vision, rapid blinking, and ictal pain.
