Anesthesia and Memory Loss in Elderly Patients

A recent study compared the cognitive functioning of people who had undergone orthopedic surgery. Overall, the patients showed a small decrease in immediate memory over the course of four years. Another study looked at the effects of anesthesia on a group of elderly patients without dementia. After surgery, they completed a computerized cognitive battery. While there were no significant changes in the immediate memory of the patients, they did show some cognitive decline in their geometric form association. They were also more likely to have abnormal memory than the control group.

Finally, a new study examined the long-term effects of anesthesia on cognitive tests designed to screen for dementia. The study was performed on elderly adults 55 years of age or older who underwent major non-cardiac surgery.

Researchers found that 10% of the patients showed long-term mental deterioration. Previously, reports had indicated that some elderly patients were at risk for anesthesia-related short-term memory loss. Moreover, the study found that some types of anesthesia could lead to faster recovery from short-term changes in the brain.
