There are a wide range of dementia devices that can help people to stay independent and safe. They are usually referred to as Assistive Technology (AT), or sometimes Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT). They include alarm systems, clocks with large digits, medication reminders and locator devices. They can be used by individuals or by caregivers. However, it’s important to remember that every person with dementia experiences the condition differently and what works for one person may not work for another. tracker for dementia patients The best thing to do is to speak with a trained Occupational Therapist, who can provide advice on the type of equipment that would be most helpful for a particular person.
Personal emergency response systems (PERS), such as those from AngelSense, can be worn on a necklace or lanyard and triggered by the press of a button when someone falls. The most advanced ones come with automatic fall detection and GPS tracking, so you can always find your loved one.
Some alarm systems can also call a sequence of pre-recorded contacts, such as family members and carer agencies, to ask for help when the individual has a fall or is at risk of wandering. Some can even have two-way voice capability to allow you to talk with them if they are able to do so.
Many older people with dementia enjoy using digital technology and can derive great pleasure, enjoyment and relaxation from it. Research has shown that digital devices like iPads and Alexa can improve a person’s quality of life. The NHS Widening Digital Participation programme has found that people with dementia can use these devices to access online support services and manage their health, social and financial affairs. The Leeds Dementia Pathfinder project also trialled these devices at support groups and'memory cafes' and loaned them to carers for them to use in their homes.
