Public interest vs. what the public is interested in- is there a difference? QUOTE
do the public make the news or the journalists
Who do journalists write for?
-themselves? self agenda, writing for other journalists, in code, trying to one up eachother, false claims, breakthrough news story, recognition
-the public?
-their boss? who will pay them-freelance-journalists need to eat too-goes against principles- corporate companies- owners of ALL THE NEWSPAPERS- chesterton quote? censorship by the media- big newspapers need to be trusted but are hard to trust- sensational news stories- marketing- citizens are not customers-
is journalism just marketing? do journalists work with the public, or for the public?
Since the early 17th century, journalists have been reporting the news in print newspapers. The invention of tv, radio and the internet meant the birth of mass media and in this modern age of new technology we find ourselves immersed in journalistic writings. We are constantly bombarded with headlines and news articles, with an abundance of international news stories at our fingertips. However, since the dawn of media the question has been posed: who do journalists write for?
The more cynical minds among us will say that journalists write for whomever will pay them.
It is generally naively assumed that journalists write solely for their main audience: the public. The average news reader generally accepts the word of a journalist to be truth. A reader must feel they can trust the journalist to be honest and informed, as they rely on journalism to also be informed citizens. One of the main elements of journalism is said to be, 'Journalism's first loyalty is to citizens.' (Kovach and Rosenstiel 2014, pg.72). A journalist's commitment to the public is vital to the success of not only a single journalist's career, but the success of journalism as a whole. Therefore journalists must not only report basic news, but also must know what currently is of interest to the public, as well as what is in the public interest to know.
