A tonic clonic seizure is a type of seizure that involves tonic and clonic posturing. This is the most common form of seizures.
Tonic clonic posturing is a pattern of asymmetric tonic posturing of both the upper and lower limbs. These posturings usually occur as an initial motor sign in the evolution of seizures. The characteristic posturing is followed by prolonged bilateral clonic movements.
In addition to tonic clonic posturing, there are other kinds of seizures that can cause stiffening of the body and a loss of consciousness. One of these is generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
During the initial phase of this kind of seizure, the patient may bite his tongue or experience an autonomic disturbance. He or she may also lose control of his bladder or bowels.
Generalized tonic-clonic seizures are classified into five phases. During each phase, the patient will undergo a sequence of activities, which include clonic, tonic, asymmetric tonic, polyspike and wave discharges and generalized spike and wave discharges.

Generally, the duration of a tonic clonic seizure is less than 20 seconds. Nevertheless, it can be as long as three minutes. Some of the symptoms that can be experienced during a tonic clonic seizure are tremor, stiffening of the muscles, jerking of the arms and legs, and awareness.
