Minecraft continues to make its mark on new systems with the announcement of a European launch for Vita on October 15. 4J Studios, the UK team responsible for porting the sandbox-based game, tweeted there isn't a confirmed date as yet for North America, adding "hopefully we'll hear from you soon."
The portable version of Minecraft is cross-buyable with its PS3 sibling, meaning If you've purchased the game on PSN for PS3, you can also purchase it for free on Vita, and vice-versa. Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, stated that Mojang has stated that the asking price was $20 per PS3. Savings can be transferred between PS3 and Vita and DLC purchases can be made across both editions.
Mojang announced at the time that it was in talks with Sony "to allow upgrade from Blu-ray disc Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition Minecraft: Playstation 3 and Vita". We've reached out to Sony to find out if players who own Minecraft on PS3 Blu-ray are also able to play the Vita version for free. We're waiting to hear date of release for the Vita retail version. The next week's launch is limited to PSN.
It's a busy old time at Minecraft headquarters, which of course is now Microsoft following the company's $2.5 billion acquisition of Mojang and its lucrative game.
