Seizure detection devices can alert caregivers and emergency medical services (EMS) if they detect an abnormal movement or heart rate associated with a seizure. These devices are designed to help you manage your epilepsy and get the care you need if a seizure happens.

EMFIT is the leading epilepsy seizure monitor in more than 60 countries worldwide. Suitable for adults and children, the sensor technology detects when people have continuous abnormal movements over a pre-set time, triggering an alarm and letting you know that someone has been notified.

It can also be used to detect seizures and if a person leaves their bed by accident or doesn’t return within the set time. It can be positioned under the mattress or on a bedside table and has an optional battery but power supply is also available for added reassurance.

A new approach to seizure detection has been developed based on accelerometry, the measurement of a person’s movements. The patented sensor technology differentiates between normal movements and strong muscle jerking such as tonic clonic seizures.

Several studies have evaluated the performance of these seizure-detection systems. However, these assessments are somewhat naive and usually compare detection sensitivity and false-alarm rate to gold-standard standards such as EEG and video-EEG, or self-reported seizure diaries.
