True crime has never been more popular. There are new streaming shows almost every week about murder, child sexual abuse and assault.

Hulu aired a dramatization in 2022 of the Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee tape theft. Netflix's The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker tells Caleb Lawrence McGilvary's story, which follows Kai, an internet sensation who became a murder suspect. Coltan Scrivner who runs Recreational Fear Lab says that humans are naturally curious about people with a bad reputation.

But some true-crime fans go to extremes. Critics claim that "true-crime celebrities" are abound, who use cases to enhance their social media profile or make money. The "true-crime personalities" may exaggerate the statistics, or even make up stories to get attention. Their interest in murder is not always accompanied by empathy for victims and good journalism.

Nancy Crampton Brophy was a woman with a flair for murder. The Portland-based romance and thriller author wrote steamy stories about turbulent relationships. She used seductive men to draw readers in. Murder with My Husband Mug of her female protagonists fantasized that they would kill their husbands or run away and fake their own death. In 2022, her writing career seemed to be a red light for investigators. She's in prison for the rest her life.
