Tabi Socks
Tabi socks, also known as split-toe socks in Japan, are designed to go with the wooden sandals or clogs called geta that match kimono. These socks have a special place for the big foot and come in many different designs and colors.

Tabi socks can have a variety of health benefits, from preventing bunions to improving posture and balance. Here are some of the health benefits.
Toe freedom

Tabi is a device that separates your big toe and the rest of your foot. While this may seem strange at first, there are many benefits. It gives your big toe enough space to anchor and stabilize your body weight.

Tabi absorbs sweat between toes and helps prevent the growth of bacteria. It also allows your toes the freedom to breathe so they stay cool and dry in hot weather.

Tabi were once worn by all classes of society in Japan, but they fell out of style as Japan transitioned from traditional Japanese dress to Western clothing. Recently, tabi have been reintroduced as sandal socks. They are called jikatabi and are made with heavier materials like rubber soles, as well as fasteners at the back of the socks (called kohaze), to allow them be worn with footwear.
Breathability

Tabi allows toes to spread out freely like nature intended. Tabi allows the toes to absorb water between them. This helps prevent infections and bad odors.

It is particularly important when performing foot-intensive exercises such as running. The big toe is an essential stabilizing muscle and needs enough space to function naturally. In traditional shoes, the toes are restricted into a position that is not natural. This can lead to misalignment and injury.

Modern tabi are made of quick-drying, sweat-wicking cotton to ensure maximum breathability. The tabi are also available with a five toe design, which makes them ideal for wearing with sandals featuring toe straps.
Stability

Tabi socks aren't fashionable, but they offer great support for runners and walkers. Tabi socks are more secure than western socks because they have metal clasps that run from the heel up to the ankle.

Separating the big toe from the other toes allows for the foot to return to its natural, stable position. This improved foot positioning increases trunk stability and balance.

Split-toe socks from Injinji are perfect for Bedrock sandals, and offer great comfort during winter adventures. The midweight and mini-crew material will keep your toes toasty as the temperature drops. The padded metatarsal and heel help to prevent blisters and chafing.
Bunions can be prevented

Tabi socks have a special area for your big toe. These socks are often worn with kimono clothing and traditional Japanese sandals or wooden clogs, called geta or Zori.

Separating the toes can keep your feet cooler and dryer than normal socks. This helps prevent bunions and fungal infections. The toes can be used to their full potential, which helps to strengthen the feet and improve posture.

Kohaze is a traditional tabi fastener that runs along the back of the tabi. tabi socks are made of stretch material without kohaze. Jika-tabi is a variation made from heavier material with rubber soles that look like boots. It is still worn by Japanese physical workers. These are called working tabi.
Posture

Tabi socks with a separate big toe promote a good walking posture. It stops the foot from sliding backwards or forwards, allows the toes move naturally, and promotes balance and stability.

Many martial artists who practice Aikido, Karate or Taiko wear these traditional Japanese socks. Taiko drummers also wear them as do Suzuki actors. The acupuncture meridians located between the toes are said to improve digestion, which is good for the spine and back.

Tabi socks were first developed in the 15th Century to go with Japanese sandals, zori or geta. Originally they were made from leather, but they are now commonly sewn with cotton. The kohaze metal clasps are placed along the opening to keep them in place.
