If 120 frames per second on the display of your gaming laptop is twice as fast as 60 frames per-second, then surely eight-times as many frames is eight-times as good. This is the reasoning behind the latest super high-refresh rate panels offered on Alienware gaming laptops. The Dell subsidiary now sells its M17 R5 17-inch laptops, as well as x17R2 17-inch laptops that feature brand new panels. It is claimed to be the fastest in the market.
Although the panels only display 1080p resolution with this incredible refresh rate, it's probably for good. You'll have to play games that output nearly 500 frames-per-second for you to experience the benefits - switch off ray-tracing and go with Minecraft-grade textures, I suppose. The new screen has a response time of 3ms, and it's compatible with both AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync, depending on the GPU configuration. The upgrade costs $300 over the 165Hz base screen, which amounts to 95 cents per hertz.
I've seen demos of 120hz screens versus 240hz at trade shows and they were enough to convince me that at least some ultra-fast gamers would see a benefit from them. But what about doubling that speed again? I'm not sure if it will enhance actual gaming performance. Editum I'm pretty sure it won't double it, even for amazing eSports pros with Special Eyes. Gaming equipment is known for its extravagant excesses.
